I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 438

That very darkness was the reason Seraphina used to complain about Frederick to Finnegan back in the day. She never understood how a perfectly fine man had warped into something so twisted; he certainly hadn't been that way when they first met.

But right now, the past was the least of her concerns. What she desperately needed to know was how this man had survived. There were virtually no survivors in that plane crash, yet here he was.

Seraphina quickly scanned the room. The space was immaculate, yet gave absolutely no clues as to her location.

She considered making a run for it, but the heavy front doors were already deadlocked. She had no choice but to stay put, trapped in the chilling quiet, waiting for Frederick to return.

...

The following morning, Nora enjoyed a rare day off. She lounged against the headboard, reading the morning paper.

The sound of running water echoed from the bathroom. A few minutes later, Xander stepped out, toweling off his damp hair, and took a seat by the window.

When the mattress dipped slightly, Nora naturally leaned toward him. Xander wrapped an arm around her shoulders, resting his chin on top of her head. He was just about to speak when his phone started ringing.

Glancing at the caller ID, a deep crease formed between Xander's brows. He grabbed the phone and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to take the call.

Nora didn't think much of it and went back to her reading. Even as a married couple, they respected each other's professional boundaries.

She glanced up a moment later. Xander's voice was kept to a low murmur, impossible to make out, but his expression remained strikingly grim and tense.

Nora knew him better than anyone. That look meant he was dealing with something incredibly complicated.

When Xander finally hung up and walked back over, Nora gently asked, "What happened?"

Xander sat on the edge of the bed. He remained silent for a long moment, taking her hand in his. He seemed to be carefully weighing his words, battling with whether or not to tell her the truth.
