Xander finally spoke, his voice incredibly hoarse. "Nora, are you absolutely sure you want to marry me right now? Didn't you say you still had your own goals to achieve?"
Nora blinked at him. "My goals are already accomplished. Now, it's time to focus on our goals. Xander, I'm actually a very boring person. My life consists of nothing but experiments and research papers. My social circle is pitifully small, and I'm terrible at whispering sweet nothings."
"I don't know the first thing about romance. Sometimes, when work gets crazy, I might not come home for days. These are flaws that will be very hard to fix."
Xander's lips curved upward. "Anything else?"
Nora thought for a moment before replying, "That's all for now."
"I don't need a wife who knows how to whisper sweet nothings. I can handle that department," Xander replied smoothly. "All I need is for you to think of me the very moment you're in danger or facing a crisis. You don't have to shoulder everything alone anymore. You have me. But Nora, you need to understand the consequences of this choice."
Nora squeezed his hand. "I've thought it all through. The absolute worst consequence was dying. But I'm not afraid of death anymore. However, there is one new thing I'm terrified of."
"What's that?" Xander asked softly.
"I'm terrified of never seeing you again," she whispered.
The hospital room fell silent for a long time. Sunlight spilled through the window, casting a warm glow over their intertwined hands.
Xander slowly lowered his head, bringing her hand to his lips, and pressed a tender kiss against her skin.
His lips against her fingers felt intoxicatingly warm. He held her with such delicate care, treating her like the most precious treasure in the world.
A brilliant smile reached Xander's eyes, making his dark gaze shimmer like a galaxy of stars. "Then, as soon as you're discharged, we'll head straight to The Marriage Bureau. What kind of wedding do you want? Indoor or outdoor?"
Nora laughed at his rapid-fire questions. "Weren't you just hesitating a minute ago? Why are you suddenly in such a rush?"
