Seraphina stumbled back a step, staring at Nora in sheer disbelief. She had anticipated countless reactions—fury, hysterics, a total emotional breakdown. The only thing she hadn't prepared for was this.
This level of apathy couldn't be faked. Nora had genuinely, entirely moved on.
"You really don't love him? But why?"
Nora didn't even bother looking at her anymore. She sat back down in her chair, her tone clipped and dismissive. "Are you finished? If you're done, get out and shut the door behind you."
Seraphina opened her mouth to argue, but her phone suddenly began ringing. She glanced down at the screen, and her heart sank into her stomach.
It was Dr. Maxwell Reed calling from the hospital.
After hesitating for a few excruciating seconds, Seraphina stepped out into the hallway and answered the call, desperately forcing her voice to sound sweet and steady. "Dr. Reed, how can I help you?"
Dr. Reed's voice was frigid. "Ms. Shaw, if it is convenient, I need you to come to the hospital immediately. There is a matter I wish to confirm with you in person."
Seraphina gripped her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white, trying to mask the tremor in her voice. "What matter, Dr. Reed? I'm actually a bit swamped today. Could I perhaps come visit you another time?"
Dr. Reed's tone booked no argument. "Not another time. Right now."
And with that, he hung up.
Standing alone in the corridor, Seraphina turned deathly pale. Dr. Reed definitely knew something. Who was he? An absolute titan in the medical community who valued academic integrity above all else. And worse, she had just been exposed for faking the very qualifications he cherished, making her claim as his savior incredibly suspicious.
