I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 325

Felix forced a stiff, unnatural smile, his lips feeling numb. Desperate, he wondered if Nora had sensed his feelings and was using this as an excuse to gently reject him. "Nora, this is a massive life decision. You need to think this through carefully. Don't let anyone pressure you into this. No one has the right to dictate your future."

Nora pressed her lips together. "Felix, my mind is made up. The reason I'm telling you this is because I see you as my dearest brother. I don't want to hide anything from you."

Felix's heart sank like a stone. She was drawing a permanent line in the sand. She was telling him, unequivocally, that they would never be more than friends.

He hadn't made a move earlier because Nora had poured her entire soul into her research. He hadn't wanted to distract her, preferring to protect her from the sidelines.

When she had married Finnegan, Felix hadn't slept for days. He had drowned his sorrow in alcohol, completely terrified to confess his true feelings.

Believing she was happily married, he had gracefully bowed out, content to watch over her from afar.

But when he finally learned her marriage was a living hell, he had tried to step up—only to find out he was already too late. Nora wasn't giving him an opening.

It was his own fault for being a coward. He had wasted every opportunity, absolutely paralyzed by the fear that confessing would ruin their friendship forever.

Felix finally accepted that he was a coward. He was terrified of losing his place in her life.

But hearing that she was remarrying cemented the painful truth: he never had a chance to begin with.

Felix let out a soft laugh, though his eyes looked as if they were weeping. He reached out and gently ruffled her hair. "I'm really glad you told me. It means a lot that you see me as family. Nora, whatever happens, you come to me. If Xander Harrison ever mistreats you, I will personally tear him apart. You'll always be like a little sister to me, and I will never let anyone hurt you."
