Finnegan desperately wanted to argue back, but the words died in his throat. His face turned as hard as ice, and his grip on his phone tightened until his knuckles went white.
Right then, his phone buzzed. It was a call from Alastair Fletcher. "How did it go? Are you on your way back yet?"
Finnegan remained painfully silent. His hesitation instantly triggered Alastair's suspicions. "Speak! What's going on?"
Through gritted teeth, Finnegan forced the words out. "Grandpa, I'm sorry. We failed. Nora is gone."
Alastair's furious roar erupted through the speaker. "What?! Frederick, you useless piece of trash! If you can't even handle a simple task like this, what good are you?!"
Finnegan ended the call, his chest heaving with barely contained rage. He couldn't fathom why Xander Harrison had suddenly shown up. If it weren't for that bastard standing in his way, they would already be on the road back to the estate.
Xander Harrison...
He swore they were mortal enemies!
Meanwhile, inside the sleek car, Nora's racing heart finally began to settle. She closed her eyes, taking slow, deep breaths to steady herself.
Xander handed her a bottle of water, his deep, magnetic voice cutting through the silence. "Have some water."
Nora glanced at him, accepted the bottle, and murmured her thanks. As she went to unscrew the top, she realized the seal was already broken. She pressed her lips together, shooting Xander a look of profound gratitude.
Xander initiated the conversation casually. "Why did Frederick suddenly show up to kidnap you?"
Nora lowered her gaze, her expression turning somber. "The Fletchers knew I was returning home today for my mother and brother's memorial. They wanted to force their way in with me, refusing to give up their claim on the Newman family's wealth."
She paused for a moment before asking, "Why are you here, Mr. Harrison?"
Xander arched an eyebrow, clearly having no intention of lying. "To find you."
Nora blinked in surprise. "To find me? Why?"
Xander smiled. "To accompany you to the Newman Estate."
