I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 284

Another team member eagerly joined the teasing. "Right? Hell must have frozen over."

Nora waved a hand dismissively, not even looking up as she began packing her things. "Alright, alright, get out of here before you start bothering me."

A sharp-eyed female researcher immediately seized the opportunity. "Oh, bothering you? Looks like our Director has a date! No wonder you're so quick to send us packing."

A fleeting trace of awkwardness brushed across Nora's cheeks before vanishing just as quickly. She instantly put on her strict boss face. "I was just worried you were all overworked. It has absolutely nothing to do with me."

Knowing when to quit, the team laughed, grabbed their bags, and filtered out of the conference room one by one.

Once the door clicked shut, she was the only one left in the room.

Nora patted her cheeks, pressing the back of her hand against her skin to check the temperature.

She hadn't looked too unnatural just now, had she? Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her belongings and walked out.

She hadn't gone far before a familiar figure appeared at the end of the corridor.

Finnegan Fletcher was dressed in a dark gray overcoat, holding a file in his hand while speaking to someone beside him.

This was a hospital owned by the Fletcher Corporation, so running into him here was the most normal thing in the world.

Nora's footsteps faltered for a second, but she quickly masked her reaction and kept walking.

As she passed him, she offered a polite, distant nod—exactly how she would treat any corporate superior—and attempted to walk right by.

Finnegan's brow creased, clearly displeased by her icy demeanor.

He reached out and snagged her wrist, halting her in her tracks. "Nora, are you done with your work? Care to grab lunch together?"

Nora rejected the offer without a second thought. She didn't believe they had anything worth sitting down to eat over. Her voice was painfully polite and entirely detached, a complete 180 from her warmth in the clinic earlier. "No thank you, Mr. Fletcher. I'm not accustomed to eating with others."

"I'm over here, Mr. Harrison."

Nora instantly called back, using the momentum to smoothly slip her wrist out of Finnegan's grip. Without sparing Finnegan another glance, she walked briskly toward Xander.

Xander raised an eyebrow at Finnegan, his striking eyes holding a flash of deep, mocking amusement.

Watching the effortless intimacy between them caused Finnegan's face to turn dangerously cold.

Unable to hold himself back, he barked her name down the hall. "Nora!"

He strode over aggressively, glaring down at her with a furious scowl. "Do you even know who this man is? Since when did you two get so close?"

Nora looked back at him, her tone deadpan. "I don't see how that is any of your business, Mr. Fletcher."
