I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 278

Completely satisfied, Bonnie buried her face in the nanny's neck and was carried upstairs.

Xander grabbed his car keys and offered to drive Nora home.

Nora felt a faint flutter of nerves. This was probably their first time being truly alone without Bonnie there as a buffer.

Trapped in the tight confines of the car, she wasn't sure what they were supposed to talk about.

She placed her bag on her lap and clicked her seatbelt into place, debating whether to pick up the data model discussion she'd had with his dad. But to her surprise, Xander spoke first.

His voice was a shade lower than usual. "My family really admires your brilliance, so they came on a bit strong tonight. I hope you don't mind."

Nora smiled. "Of course not. After talking with them tonight, a lot of data theories I couldn't figure out suddenly clicked into place."

The corners of Xander's mouth curled up. "Glad it helped."

He paused, keeping his eyes fixed on the road, tossing out his next words with practiced casualness. "Next time, I'll bring Bonnie to see you."

Nora nodded, leaning back against her seat as she watched the city streets blur past the window.

It took her several seconds to fully process what he had said. Next time. Was he asking her out? Setting up their next meeting?

A tiny, involuntary smile touched her lips. The thought was undeniably a bit overwhelming.

When they arrived at her building, Nora unbuckled her seatbelt and stepped out. Bending down to look through the passenger window, she waved. "Goodnight, Xander."

Xander nodded, waiting until she had completely disappeared into the lobby before putting the car in gear and pulling out of the complex.

"I think she's more than worthy of marrying into the Harrison family. Yes, she's been married before and has a child, but you can't deny she is an incredibly brilliant woman in her own right. Being a mother and a wife are just chapters of her life; they don't define her entirely. Her academic prowess, her impeccable grace, her raw sincerity toward Bonnie—you simply cannot fake that."

Sebastian leaned back against the sofa and nodded slowly, thoroughly agreeing.

He let out a leisurely sigh. "Then we should have them married as soon as possible."

Genevieve laughed, shooting her husband a look, before her brows suddenly furrowed in thought.

"However, her ties with the Fletcher family are still a bit messy. Remind Xander to step in and help her out when needed. We can't have her shouldering everything on her own."

Sebastian chuckled. "Of course. We couldn't be more pleased with our future daughter-in-law."
