Zelda smiled knowingly. She took Bonnie's hand and said, "Come on, Bonnie, let me take you inside to find some yummy treats." With that, she and Nora led the little girl toward the main hall.
The two men were left standing at the entrance. They exchanged a brief, measuring glance, then averted their eyes and followed the women inside, one after the other.
The setup for the press conference was sleek and dignified. The long tables were draped in navy blue cloths, with nameplates and bottled water meticulously placed in front of every chair.
The projector was playing a continuous loop of the Phase Two project introduction video. The cameramen in the media section had already set up their equipment, and a few early-arriving reporters were looking down, flipping through the press releases.
Finnegan Fletcher had already arrived and was sitting on the stage, reviewing the itinerary in his hands.
He was wearing a dark gray suit today, looking energized and sharp. When he saw Nora and the others walk in, he immediately stood up from his chair, bypassed the long table, and walked toward her. "Nora, you made it."
Nora's footsteps paused, her tone strictly strictly professional. "Mr. Fletcher, in a setting like this, it's best if we stick to formal titles. Today, we are business partners, not family."
Finnegan's brows furrowed, and the smile on his face stiffened for a fraction of a second.
He lowered his voice, sounding exasperated. "Do you have to be so distant with me? What's wrong with me calling you by your first name at an event like this? It's not hurting anyone."
Nora looked at him calmly, her voice flat and unwavering. "We are here to facilitate a partnership between two organizations. If you insist on keeping things informal, then I have no choice but to pull out of this collaboration and find a representative who knows how to be professional. It's your choice, Mr. Fletcher."
Finnegan was rendered speechless by her threat.
He stared at her calm, almost indifferent face, and that familiar, suffocating tightness welled up in his chest again.
But he knew Nora wasn't joking. She really would turn around and walk right out the door. He let out a helpless sigh and took half a step back. "Alright, Dr. Newman. Please take your seat. The press conference is about to begin."
As soon as he said that, Xander and Felix walked in, one after the other.
But now? He had only been 'biologically dead' for five years, and Nora was already laughing and chatting with other men, getting so close to them?
Not only did she take the initiative to invite him to the ceremony, but she was actively defending him to Finnegan's face. His jaw clamped down involuntarily.
But Finnegan kept his temper in check publicly, swallowing his anger. "Then please take your seats. We've been waiting for you."
Nora nodded and walked toward the stage with Felix and Zelda.
Bonnie held Xander's hand as they sat in the front row of the VIP section. The little girl stared unblinkingly at Nora, her eyes shining with pure admiration.
Meanwhile, in the dimly lit stairwell near the back, a figure wearing a baseball cap slowly raised her head. Beneath the brim, a pair of heavily bloodshot eyes glared out.
