I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 241

"Mr. Fletcher, it's better if we keep our discussions strictly professional," Nora said evenly. "Please give me your answer as soon as possible."

Without a second of hesitation, she turned on her heel and walked out the door with her documents.

Finnegan frowned hard as he watched her retreating figure.

He wanted to talk about family and their personal history, but Nora only wanted to talk business.

He had hinted more than once that Finnegan Fletcher might not actually be dead, but she hadn't reacted at all, nor had she pressed him for details.

If she cared even the slightest bit, she should have grabbed him and demanded the truth, but instead, she just walked away cleanly, as if she had no lingering attachments whatsoever.

Was she truly letting go?

Finnegan ran his tongue against the inside of his cheek, a suffocating wave of frustration rising in his chest—a stifling lump caught right in his throat that he couldn't swallow down.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, sat back down at his desk, and opened the file Nora had left behind.

He had originally intended to just flip through it casually and pick out a few flaws, giving himself an excuse to talk to her next time.

But after just a few pages, he found himself reading with serious intent.

This proposal was unlike any project plan he had seen before.

The underlying logic of the data arrangement was incredibly clear, every variable sourced back to its original literature, and the risk assessment even featured three different stress-testing models corresponding to three clinical outcomes.

She set down her silverware, the sweetness fading from her voice. "Are you really planning to let Nora run the Phase II trials?"

Finnegan kept his eyes glued to the documents, not even looking up. "Do you have a better candidate?"

A surge of jealousy washed over Seraphina; she was standing right in front of him, she held a dual doctorate from a top university, and she had completed just as many projects as anyone else since joining the company.

Why couldn't he see her?

She forced a tight smile, swallowing down the bitter jealousy, and softened her voice as she perched herself on the edge of his desk, leaning in to shoot him a seductive look.

"She isn't the only one capable of doing this. What about me? I'm an official researcher at The Vance Institute of Medical Science too, and my data skills are second to none. Give the project to me, and I promise I'll do a far better job than Nora."
