He was dressed in a plain white t-shirt and dark slacks. With his towering frame, he practically blocked out half the light streaming through the doorway.
The watch on his wrist caught the light as he stood there holding a paper gift bag.
The second Sienna looked at him, his gaze darted away, landing squarely on Isaac.
"Happy birthday." He handed the bag over.
Isaac took the gift, his smile looking entirely forced.
"Didn't you say you were swamped?"
"It's your birthday. No matter how busy I am, I had to show up." Finn walked in, his eyes briefly sweeping over the extravagant, scene-stealing cake.
He didn't spare Sienna another glance.
Lily looked from Finn to Sienna, letting out an awkward, dry laugh.
She ushered everyone to their seats.
Isaac's friends caused a minor stir when they realized Finn had arrived.
Finn ignored the commotion completely. He boldly took a seat, crossed his long legs, picked up a water glass from the table, and took a sip.
Sienna remained by the window, her phone still gripped tightly in her hand.
Lily hurried over to Sienna, tugging at her sleeve and keeping her voice at a frantic whisper.
"I'm so sorry, I swear I didn't know he was coming. We agreed he wouldn't... I have no idea why he showed up..."
"It's fine. I don't mind, really. Don't worry about it." Sienna offered a reassuring smile.
Running into her scumbag ex-boyfriend was something that had happened a million times before.
She was numb to it by now.
Isaac cleared his throat loudly.
"Alright, let's, uh, cut the cake!"
Lily instantly jumped in.
"Yes! Yes! Let's cut the cake!"
She enthusiastically orchestrated the lighting of the candles while Isaac played along with a strained smile.
The party energy finally picked up, even if it felt incredibly forced.
Isaac had invited a lot of friends. He was a popular guy, and plenty of his classmates from elementary school all the way through college had shown up. They all gathered around the table.
The candles were lit.
Isaac made a wish and blew them out.
Lily clapped enthusiastically.
