A mother's love was a powerful thing.
And because of that, she had to protect her mother, too.
Zoe Lynd walked Lily home in high spirits, listening to the little girl chatter about her day at school.
Lily shared everything with her.
She talked about which classmates got into an argument, who pushed who and ended up in the nurse's office.
She talked about whose mom packed the best lunches, and how everyone avoided the kid who always tattled to the teacher.
Lily was becoming more outgoing by the day, her words flowing freely.
Seeing her daughter so excited, Zoe completely forgot about the headache of having her car transferred to Sienna Winters earlier that day.
If Hayden Thorne wanted to bend over backwards to please Sienna, he could go right ahead. She had over thirteen million dollars in her account from her comic royalties anyway.
She could easily just buy a new car.
Money gave her options, and she made up her mind right then and thereβshe was going to buy a Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Lily had once mentioned how cool the gleaming hood ornament looked, wishing her mom could drive a car like that.
Now was the perfect time to make her daughter's wish come true.
Lily was so mature it sometimes broke Zoe's heart.
When Zoe had picked her up in a cab that afternoon, Lily had only frozen for a split second upon noticing her mom's beautiful car was missing, but she hadn't said a word.
Zoe had a feeling Lily knew something was wrong, but the sweet girl hadn't asked a single question, clearly trying to spare her mother's feelings.
She wasn't like other kids who threw massive tantrums the second they didn't get what they wanted.
Zoe stayed by her daughter's side until she fell asleep.
Hayden came home at nine o'clock.
For Lily's sake, Zoe decided to put her anger over the car on hold.
She went to find Hayden.
To her surprise, he spoke first.
"I got all your comic drafts back. I need to pay you for them. Whatever you made from the copyright sale last time, I'll transfer the exact same amount to you."
Zoe raised an eyebrow. Since when was Hayden so generous? Wasn't this the same man who had scammed her out of over a million dollars just to cover a four-hundred-thousand-dollar debt for his little mistress?
She had been about to tell him honestly that she made thirteen million, but before she could get the words out, Hayden spoke again.
"Is fifty million dollars enough?"
Hayden didn't even hesitate.
"Of course. Lily is my daughter too."
Satisfied with his answer, Zoe nodded.
Hayden returned to his room. Just as he sat down to work, his phone rang. It was Sienna.
"Hayden, Holden said his school is having a parent-teacher event soon, and both parents are required to attend.
Holden has always been so sensitive about not having a father. I'm worried it'll break his heart to see all the other kids with their moms and dads. Could you please come with us that day?"
Hayden hesitated.
Sienna pressed on, "Lily goes to the same kindergarten. I know she has her event too, and I understand if it puts you in a difficult position..."
Hayden finally spoke.
"I'll go with you."
"But what about Zoe?" Sienna asked softly.
"Lily is her daughter. She'll be fine without me," Hayden replied coldly.
