The air in the room grew heavy and suffocating for a few agonizing seconds.
Madeline Caldwell's knuckles turned white around her purse strap.
Her lips pressed into a thin line. Ultimately, she said nothing, turning on her heel and walking briskly out the door.
The lounge quickly fell silent.
Virginia Caldwell sat frozen, holding the bowl of chicken soup.
Helena Vanderbilt sat across from her, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind Virginia's ear. "Drink up. I made it myself, slow-simmered to perfection."
Virginia lowered her head and took a sip.
It was savory and rich.
A comforting warmth spread through her chest.
Finishing the last drop, Virginia set the bowl down.
Helena immediately handed her a tissue.
She sat elegantly in her chair, legs crossed, the collar of her trench coat casually open, exuding a relaxed and gentle aura.
"You're a lucky girl. I simmered this broth over low heat for three hours. That brat of mine certainly isn't getting any."
Virginia paused as she wiped her mouth, murmuring, "Thank you, Helena."
The warmth of the soup seeped straight into her heart...
"No need to be so polite with me."
Helena waved a hand dismissively, her gaze filled with maternal affection. "You're juggling work and raising a child on your own. You have to take care of your health. Virginia..."
As if suddenly remembering something, she leaned forward.
"Who's looking after Cynthia these days?"
"Cynthia is older now. She goes to preschool during the day, and I have weekends off, so I take care of her in the evenings."
"But what about when you work the night shift?" Helena frowned, her voice tinged with heartache.
Virginia fell silent for a moment before offering a faint smile. "She's very mature for her age. She has her toys and smart companions at home, so she can sleep on her own. Sometimes, Mrs. Benson sees how tired I am and volunteers to stay over with her."
Her words deeply moved Virginia.
Helena's kindness had always been wonderfully straightforward.
"Well, I'll let you get back to work. I should get going. Finish the rest of the soup, and you can just give me the container next time."
Grabbing her designer handbag, Helena took two steps before looking over her shoulder. "If Cynthia ever wants to come over and play, bring her by anytime. And please, don't treat me like a stranger."
Virginia nodded, politely agreeing.
...
The following days passed far more peacefully than she had anticipated.
Helena didn't make a grand spectacle, but she was true to her word.
Every few days, she would text Virginia to ask what time Cynthia finished school and whether she needed someone to pick her up.
Before long, Cynthia had grown completely attached to Helena. Every time they met, the little girl practically glued herself to the older woman, clinging to her scarf and refusing to let go.
