Virginia paused, not bothering to deny it.
"He did come in for a few sessions."
"Sessions?" Madeline scoffed, her smile entirely devoid of warmth. "Sessions at your apartment? Sessions at eleven o'clock at night!?"
Virginia’s throat tightened.
"Ginny, I thought you knew where to draw the line."
"Let’s get one thing straight today."
"Archer and Chloe are married. They have a child and a family together. You two divorced years ago. Do I really need to teach you what is and isn't appropriate?"
"Or are you trying to be the other woman?"
Those words hit her like a physical blow, leaving a ringing in her ears.
A wave of humiliation washed over her, making her lower her gaze as her fingertips went numb.
"Have you thought about what this means for Cindy's future? What child wants to grow up with people pointing fingers, whispering that her mother is a homewrecker?"
Virginia sat there, her spine rigidly straight.
She opened her mouth to explain, but it felt as if an invisible hand was wrapped around her throat, choking back every word.
After a long moment, she finally managed to speak, her voice hoarse.
"I understand."
"I'll keep my distance from him."
Madeline scrutinized her for several seconds, seemingly weighing the credibility of the promise, before giving a dismissive curl of her lips and picking up her purse to leave.
Reaching the door, she paused and tossed one last remark over her shoulder.
"Don't blame me for being harsh, Ginny. Chloe’s health is fragile, and she can't handle this kind of stress. You're a therapist; you should understand that better than anyone."
The door clicked shut.
Virginia was left alone in the empty consultation room.
She stared at the untouched glass of water on the coffee table, remaining completely still for a very long time.
...
He didn't know how long he waited—long enough for his legs to go numb—before he finally accepted the truth. She wasn't going to let him in.
Tucking his phone away, Archer cast one last deep look at the impenetrable door before turning and walking away.
...
For the next three days, Archer followed his usual routine: commuting between home and the office like clockwork.
However, his lack of focus and insomnia only seemed to worsen.
During this time, Julian Caldwell, the Chief Legal Officer for the Vanderbilt Group, hadn't been idle. Following Archer’s orders, he and his legal team tracked down Piper Price’s family.
The meeting took place right in Piper’s living room.
Dressed in a rare, sharply tailored suit, Julian sat properly across from the trio.
With cool composure, he opened the folder in front of him and pushed it across the table.
"These are Ms. Price's complete treatment records, including the informed consent forms, session summaries, and her initial psychological evaluation. Everything is entirely legal and compliant."
Mrs. Price pretended to skim through a couple of pages, feigning ignorance.
