In the next second, Robert lunged forward and grabbed her wrist. His grip was brutal, the force making her wince in pain.
"Who the hell do you think you are, playing hard to get, you used goods?! A divorcée with dead weight attached—women like you should be kissing my feet for the chance to sit at my table! And you have the nerve to give me an attitude?!"
Virginia turned her head, staring coldly at the hand clamped around her wrist.
"Let go."
Instead of letting go, Robert took a step closer, his rancid breath making Virginia furrow her brow in deep disgust.
"Stop pretending. You dressed up like a tease tonight because you wanted to seduce me and marry into the Sterling family as fast as possible, didn't you? I accept..."
"Mommy!"
Suddenly, a tearful, panicked little voice rang out from the entrance.
It was Cynthia.
The little girl, wearing a pink puffer jacket and her hair in pigtails, came charging over with her tiny fists clenched, her eyes red and puffy.
"Let go of my Mommy! You're a bad guy!"
Robert paused, turning his head to look.
The very next second, a large, knuckle-baring hand shot out from his blind spot, clamping over his wrist and violently twisting it backward.
"Ah! Ow, ow, ow! Let go!"
Robert released Virginia in agonizing pain, his entire body forced downward until his knees nearly slammed into the table edge.
It was Archer.
He stood beside Robert, his expression glacial. He held Robert down with just one hand, barely exerting any effort, yet the man was entirely helpless against him.
"What the hell! Who do you think you are..."
Archer didn't even bother looking at him. He simply jerked his chin, and two security guards who had rushed over instantly grabbed Robert by both arms.
Archer released his grip and took a half-step back. Pulling a handkerchief from his pocket, he unhurriedly wiped his palm and the back of his hand.
Robert continued to struggle, swearing loudly. "Who the fuck are you? I'm a Sterling, I'm warning you..."
Archer lowered his eyes, his expression unreadable. "Put some ointment on your wrist when you get home."
She paused for a second before walking out without looking back, holding her daughter close.
...
The news reached Madeline's ears that very night.
She spent the entire night in a panic, tossing and turning restlessly.
It wasn't just because she felt bad for Virginia, but because... Archer had been there.
The truth was, Chloe had been the one to recommend Robert.
She had painted him as the perfect catch, claiming he was wealthy, mature, reliable, and capable. She insisted that since Virginia had a child and an exhausting job counseling the elderly, marrying Robert would allow her to live comfortably.
Persuaded by the prospect, Madeline had set the whole thing up.
She never imagined it would end in such a disaster...
