Cynthia grew confused. "Is the signal gone? Mr. Archer? Are you still there?"
"I'm here," he replied, his fist clenched tight, his voice dropping low. "Who told you that?"
"Grandma! Grandma said Mommy is on a blind date today, and if it works out, that person is gonna be Mommy's boyfwend." Cynthia scrunched her little nose. "Mr. Archer, what does boyfwend mean?"
There was no sound from the other end of the line.
"Mr. Archer..."
"Cindy. The next time Mommy has a date, call me. I'll explain exactly what a boyfriend is then."
With that, his eyes darkened and he hung up the phone.
The little girl pouted at the black screen. "He still didn't answer my question..."
...
Three days later.
Nathan asked Virginia out for dinner at a downtown Japanese restaurant.
Virginia wore a navy-blue dress that cinched perfectly at her waist, her hair pulled back into a high ponytail. She looked effortlessly elegant.
By the time she arrived, Nathan was already there, standing up like a perfect gentleman to pull out her chair.
His punctuality definitely earned him some extra points.
"Dr. Caldwell, I wasn't sure what you liked, so I didn't order blindly." Handing over the menu, Nathan gave the waiter a discreet nod.
Virginia sat down, gracefully taking the menu. Just as she was about to order, a figure caught her eye.
A tall man in a dark gray cashmere coat was approaching, a navy-blue scarf draped loosely around his neck and one hand casually tucked into his pocket.
More importantly, his other hand was holding onto a little girl with pigtails.
Virginia froze. It was Archer and Cynthia.
The moment the little girl spotted her, she let go of the man's massive hand and sprinted over on her short legs. "Mommy!"
But just as Virginia was trying to figure out how to introduce Archer, he nonchalantly supplied the answer. "Ex-husband. Daughter."
Nathan's polite smile completely froze on his face.
He instinctively glanced at Virginia. She stiffened, but she didn't deny it.
Even the waiter standing by looked absolutely stunned by the sheer drama unfolding.
You could hear a pin drop in the private dining room.
Archer's face betrayed zero emotion, though his movements remained undeniably gentle as he lifted Cynthia into a high chair.
Once she was settled, his long fingers tapped the table twice. "Cindy doesn't eat raw food. Please add a warm tamagoyaki."
The waiter snapped out of it, jotting down the order before hurriedly excusing himself.
Nathan looked terribly stiff, his voice heavy with thick awkwardness. "Actually... Dr. Caldwell, I just remembered there's an emergency at the hospital..."
