Once again, the chain moved, lifting Falcon back out of the water. He gasped heavily, his eyes fixed on Cale and Chris with undisguised fury.
But it meant nothing to the two men, whose attention remained on their chess match.
And because of that, Falcon's roar echoed throughout the room where they were being held. "Cale Miller! I'm going to kill you!!!"
Unfortunately, all of Falcon's curses still failed to draw Cale's attention.
Falcon hurled even louder curses. His voice echoed throughout the underground chamber, filled with rage and contempt. He kept trying to provoke the man seated a few meters away, hoping that, just once, Cale would lose control or at least turn to look at him.
But that moment never came.
Cale remained silent. His eyes never left the chessboard before him. To him, Falcon's every insult was nothing more than meaningless noise, unworthy of a response. He studied the arrangement of the pieces for a few moments before calmly moving his queen until it came to rest on the final square.
"Checkmate."
Chris stared at the board for several seconds before letting out a long sigh.
"Ah, damn it. Why do you always win?" he grumbled as he leaned back in his chair. Though he sounded annoyed, the faint smile at the corner of his lips made it clear that the loss hadn't affected his mood in the slightest.
Only then did Cale slowly raise his head. His gaze shifted from Falcon to Silas. His demeanor remained perfectly calm.
It was precisely that calmness that made Silas's chest tighten even more. For years, he had always believed that an angry enemy was an easy one to defeat. But the man standing before him showed not the slightest trace of emotion. As though everything they had endured wasn't important enough to change the expression on his face.
"You're both still breathing," Cale said quietly.
He rose from his chair with an unhurried motion, straightened the sleeves of his shirt, then walked toward the two captives.
"That means," he stopped directly between Falcon and Silas, "I'm not finished yet."
The sharp snap of his fingers shattered the silence.
The two guards standing by the pond immediately understood the command. They turned the chain winches almost simultaneously. The screech of grinding metal echoed throughout the room, followed by Falcon's and Silas's bodies dropping so quickly that neither of them had time to take a deep breath.
Splash!
Cale simply stood a few steps in front of them, watching the two of them with the same impassive gaze.
In that room, pain was not the cruelest thing.
It was the realization that their lives and deaths were now in the hands of someone who didn't even have to raise his voice to strip them of hope.
"Do you still want to talk, Falcon?" Cale asked calmly.
Silence once again settled over the underground chamber after Cale spoke those final words. Only the sound of water dripping from the ceiling and the faint ripples across the pond beneath Falcon and Silas could be heard.
Cale calmly walked toward Silas, carrying a black folder that had been lying on the chess table moments earlier. He opened it slowly, as though the two men hanging before him were less important than the pages of reports he was reading.
"Vincent's report just came in."
His tone remained flat. He turned the first page without any haste.
"Your four storage warehouses have been secured. The twelve safe houses you've spent years establishing have also been cleared." His fingers turned another page. "Every account used to move your organization's funds has been frozen. Your weapons distribution network has been cut off. Your trusted associates have all been identified."
