Eli was beginning to lose her patience. “Did what?”

“Letting Josh drive you here. Saying in front of everyone that you have a boyfriend who is the captain of the basketball team. And now you’re standing in front of me and acting as if nothing happened.” David stared at her sharply. “You deliberately made me look like an idiot, didn’t you?”

Eli’s eyes slowly changed. She did not answer immediately. Every word David said felt like an accusation thrown at her without the slightest thought about how she felt.

“I never meant to do that.”

“But you did.”

“Do you think I don’t know what you’re doing?” David continued. “You want to make me jealous? You want to show me that you can get another man whenever you want? Or maybe from the beginning, you really thought our relationship was just a game?”

Eli looked at him with hurt in her eyes. Her eyes began to well up, but she tried to hold the tears back. “Is that what you think of me?”

David fell silent.

“It was just a joke.” David rubbed his face in frustration. “Can’t you see how ridiculous it was?”

“I was there, David. And I don’t think it was just some silly joke.”

Those words made David fall silent for a moment.
