The question made Eli fall silent.
Not because she did not know what to say, but because for the first time, she felt that she was beginning to understand what Natalie was really like. All this time, she had always tried to think well of the girl.
She thought Natalie was simply too dependent on David and perhaps really needed someone who could understand her. She also tried to behave like a friend who understood the other person. Although, if she looked closely at it, Eli was usually the one who gave in.
But as time went by, Eli began to realize that almost everything Natalie said always managed to make her feel guilty or doubt herself.
Once again, Natalie asked the same question as if Eli had to answer immediately. She did not want any delay.
Eli finally exhaled softly. “I’m tired. I want to go back to my room.”
Natalie chuckled softly. “Are you avoiding my question?”
“I don’t want to say anything,” Eli replied calmly. “If that’s what you want to believe, then go ahead.”
Natalie’s smile slowly disappeared. She had not expected Eli to answer like that. Usually, Eli would explain at length, defend herself, or try to convince others that there was nothing between her and Josh. But this time, Eli did none of that.
David, who had been silent all this time, began to look annoyed. “Eli, I want to talk to you.”
Eli looked at him for a moment. “Now?”
“Yes.”
“I’m really tired, David.”
“I just want to talk,” David said a little insistently.
The tone of David’s voice made Eli know that he would not stop if she refused. Eli finally nodded slightly. “All right.”
However, before Eli could take a step, the car door opened and Josh got out. He looked at Eli, then at David and Natalie in turn. His gaze immediately turned wary. “Is there a problem?”
Eli immediately shook her head with a faint smile, trying to reassure Josh. “There’s nothing wrong.”
Josh continued looking at David and Natalie in turn. “Are you sure?”
“Yes. There’s nothing to worry about.”
Josh clearly did not believe it just like that. He knew that this time, the girl was also trying to hide something. But Eli smiled faintly at him again.
“Go home, Josh. I can handle it.”
Josh fell silent for a few moments. He still looked hesitant, but eventually sighed. “If anything happens, call me.”
“Yes.”
“Next week, I’ll pick you up.” Josh approached and deliberately straightened the ends of Eli’s hair that had been slightly tousled by the wind. “Don’t make too many excuses. Mom wants you to come over for dinner.”
Eli pouted and quickly brushed Josh’s hand away. “I know.”
Josh chuckled. But his eyes continued watching the two people near Eli, David and Natalie. Once he was sure Eli was in a safe situation, Josh finally left the dorm area.
