The phone screen glowed, illuminating Lydia's face, which had just completely died of mortification.
In her twenty-eight years of life, she had never made such a catastrophic blunder.
She considered replying with a simple "Typo," but given Xavier's relentless habit of pushing boundaries, she knew he would never let it go.
After a moment's thought, she decided the best course of action was to completely ignore it.
That night, not a single new message appeared in her chat with Xavier.
She was settling into the new apartment quite well, ending up sleeping all the way until noon the next day.
After brushing her teeth and throwing together a quick bowl of instant noodles, she headed out to buy groceries.
It was New Year's Eve. Even if she was celebrating alone, she was going to have a proper New Year's dinner.
By the time she hauled her groceries back to her building, over two hours had passed.
She walked into the lobby, heading for the elevators, only to freeze dead in her tracks.
Standing right in front of the elevator doors was a tall, broad-shouldered man with a flawless side profile. If it wasn't Xavier, who else could it be?
He was casually holding a bag of his own groceries, waiting for the elevator to arrive.
"Coach Vance." Lydia stepped forward. "What are you doing here?"
At the sound of her voice, Xavier shifted his gaze to her, tossing the question right back. "What are you doing here?"
"The apartment I rented is in this building."
Xavier narrowed his eyes, a devastating smirk playing on his lips. "Wow, friend. You really went all out to get close to me, didn't you?"
Lydia was utterly baffled. "What on earth are you talking about now?"
"You found out I lived in Pinecrest Manor, so you purposely moved here. Right?"
It took a second for Lydia's brain to catch up. "You live in Pinecrest Manor too?"
Xavier scoffed. "Keep acting."
"..." Lydia stared at him in disbelief, a horrible realization dawning on her. "Wait... do you live in this exact building?"
"Yeah."
"What's your apartment number?"
"18-1."
"..."
When Lydia didn't say anything, Xavier decided to tease her. "What's wrong? Don't tell me you live right across the hall from me?"
His cursed mouth had hit the nail right on the head.
She lived in 18-2. Directly across from him.
Fate was clearly out to destroy her.
