His Heart Knew Before He Did novel Chapter 17

Lydia stared at the hickey on his neck, her mind spinning into absolute chaos.

How could she possibly have done something like that?

If she couldn't remember it, it didn't happen. And if it didn't happen, she didn't do it.

She denied it instantly. "I did not."

"You don't believe me?" Xavier pouted mockingly. "My grandma witnessed the whole thing last night. Want me to bring her in to testify?"

"..." Lydia shot him a dirty look. "What exactly do you want?"

"Haven't decided yet." Xavier had his trap perfectly laid. "You owe me one."

Lydia didn't bother arguing and turned to leave.

"Where are you going?" Xavier asked.

"None of your business."

"Tomorrow is New Year's Eve."

"Makes no difference to me."

As soon as Lydia walked downstairs, she spotted a white-haired woman wearing a vibrant, festive jacket.

She looked to be at least eighty, but her eyes were sharp, and she carried herself with robust energy.

This had to be Xavier's grandmother.

Abigail enthusiastically waved her over, her voice booming with warmth. "Lydia, sweetheart, you're awake! Breakfast is ready, come eat."

"No thank you, Grandma." Lydia gave her a polite bow. "I'm so sorry for intruding last night. Happy early New Year."

The second Lydia stepped out the door, Xavier followed her outside.

He stood on the porch, his eyes dark and brooding as he watched her walk away.

Abigail sidled up next to him, taking one look at the red mark on his neck before shaking her head. "Told you it wouldn't work. Making me use a spoon to give you a hickey first thing in the morning... Your little tricks are completely outdated!"

Xavier remained silent, his gaze still locked onto the spot where Lydia had disappeared.

Abigail patted his shoulder, her voice taking on a heavy, knowing tone. "Xavier, that girl is carrying a lot of ghosts. With a heart that heavy, she's not going to be easy to win over."
