He was standing in the kitchen, wearing an apron, cooking dinner.
"You're back."
Ottilie took off her shoes. Yorath's broad frame completely blocked the narrow entryway, making it impossible for her to squeeze past.
She went over to the sink to help wash the vegetables.
"Why did you buy so much food?"
"It's my mother's birthday on Monday," Yorath replied smoothly.
Right after the holiday weekend. Just two days away.
"Wish her a happy birthday for me," Ottilie said.
"I bought extra ingredients to prep the dishes here. I'll cook them and take them over on the day."
"Wait, am I supposed to go too?" Ottilie finally caught the underlying implication.
"Yes. My mother wants to see you."
"Why would she want to see me?"
"You demanded that I marry you. How can I marry you if you don't meet my parents?"
Ottilie fell silent.
Yorath plated the stir-fry and looked back at her. "Why aren't you saying anything?"
"Does your family actually agree to us getting married?"
"They'll all be dead eventually."
Ottilie let out a dry laugh. "Right."
"I have plans on Monday," she stated, deciding that attending Lachlan's networking dinner was vastly preferable to facing Marcella Fordham.
"Doing what?" Yorath asked casually, still focused on the food.
"I made plans with someone. I can't cancel on them."
Yorath didn't say another word.
After they finished eating, he pulled out the contract.
Ottilie glanced at it. "Nyssa called me yesterday."
Yorath raised an eyebrow.
"I'm really not in the mood to read a contract right now," Ottilie said.
Yorath tossed the papers aside and sat down next to her. "Nyssa is just an actress under the agency."
"I'm just an actress under the agency too."
"The actress I'm going to marry?" Yorath mocked lightly.
"I take back what I said before. I was wrong. I don't want to marry you anymore."
Ottilie stood up to leave.
Yorath grabbed her waist, pulling her hard into his lap. He caught her chin in his hand, forcing her to look into his beautiful, dangerous eyes.
