Just as the scalding hot tea was about to spill all over her, Logan Lennox, who had been deep in conversation with Skylar Vance, suddenly shouted a warning.

In a blur of motion, he reached out his arm, shielding Stella completely.

With a sharp clatter, the ceramic teacup slammed onto the solid wood table.

Logan let out a low groan, his brow furrowing deeply from the sudden, searing pain.

"Logan!" Skylar shrieked, scrambling up to check on him in a panic.

The terrified waiter babbled a stream of frantic apologies.

Stella simply stood there, staring at Logan in shock.

Everything had unfolded in the blink of an eye, and her brain was still struggling to process it.

Skylar had already rolled up Logan's sleeve. Even through two layers of fabric, the skin on his arm was an angry, blistering red.

Grabbing an open bottle of iced water from the table, Skylar immediately poured it over Logan's burn. She turned and snapped at the trembling waiter, "Go get burn ointment. Now."

The waiter practically sprinted away.

Stella finally snapped out of her daze. It felt inappropriate for her to act too concerned, so she kept her distance. "Do you need to go to the hospital?"

Logan shook his head dismissively. "It's fine. The clothes took the brunt of it. It's not that serious."

Tears welled up in Skylar's eyes. She choked back a sob, looking utterly heartbroken. "Any worse and your skin would have peeled right off."

Watching them, Stella felt incredibly awkward and entirely out of place.

No one could have predicted the accident, but if Logan hadn't stepped in to protect her, Skylar wouldn't be suffering this emotional distress.
