Opening the front door, he paused. "Right."
He turned his head and looked at her, every word dead serious, "Your kissing skills are still garbage."
Bam!
The door slammed shut with aggressive force.
Juniper stood frozen for several seconds, leaning heavily against the wall as a suffocating wave of despair washed over her.
She had always known Nelson was reckless and unpredictable, but back then she had viewed him through rose-tinted glasses. All his flaws had seemed perfect to her.
She slowly made her way to the couch and collapsed onto it, her head throbbing.
The impact knocked her hearing aid loose.
She quickly picked it up, but when she placed it back in her ear, she couldn't hear a thing.
Nelson was a jinx. Her hearing aid was actually broken.
She stared at the small device in a daze, her mind drifting back to the first time she had worn it. The muffled world had instantly sharpened into clarity. Her eyes had lit up with pure excitement as she asked Nelson to say something.
Nelson had rolled his eyes impatiently. "Juniper, Juniper, Juniper? Can you hear me? Wren?"
"I can hear you! Wow, this is amazing."
She had laughed so hard that tears streamed down her face, quickly wiping them away. "Nelson, thank you. Seriously, thank you."
She had been so overwhelmed she could barely speak, cupping her ear to listen intently, refusing to miss a single second of sound.
Nelson had been acting completely indifferent, but suddenly his expression turned serious. "How did you lose your hearing anyway?"
The smile vanished from Juniper's face. She lowered her head and refused to answer.
How did she lose it?
Her father had beaten her.
She had always been an obedient child, and back then, she didn't even understand why she was being punished.
She only remembered a relative visiting their home, bringing along a boy her age.
