Chapter 79
The cafe door opened then and I tensed as he stepped out, his gaze moving once before settling directly on the car, on me, like he had already pieced everything together.
I waved at him quickly and urgently, trying to communicate without actually speaking.

Then I stopped as I saw her.
Mabel.
She was right behind him.

From there, I could hear everything as they approached.
“I thought you were leaving,” Mabel said, her voice light but intentional.
“L/am,” DeLuca replied, calmly.
“Okay. Can I get your number?”
“No.”

There was another pause, and then came the question I had been dreading.
“Okay. But why did you come into the cafe if you would be leaving at once?”
My entire body went still. He was going to mention me.
Don’t say it. Don’t say my name.
“Something came up so I have to leave,” DeLuca said after a moment, his tone unchanged and relief came quietly./
