He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 42

Chapter 42

(Daisy’s POV)

Fritzo.

In my doorway.

In daylight and in a place where people minded their business, went to class, complained about assignments, and did not- under any normal circumstance, interact with men who looked like they could casually walk into a fight and leave with blood on their skin.

For a second, I just stared at him, and he stared back. Neither of us said anything. Then my brain caught up.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

It came out sharper than I intended, but honestly, I felt like I deserved that.

My eyes flicked past him automatically, scanning the hallway, the open space, the possibility that someone might walk by and see

this- see him, and decide to ask questions I did not have answers for.

Because there was no explanation for this and there was no normal version of events where this made sense.

He didn’t belong here.

“Did surveillance get boring for you,” I added quickly, lowering my voice, “or are you just visiting like this is normal now?”

He didn’t react to that. He spoke instead. “You haven’t been following the schedule you sent us,” he said. Straight to the point.

I blinked once. Then it clicked.

“Oh.”

That was all I had for a second. Because he was right.

Technically.

“Yeah,” I said, shifting slightly in the doorway. “That.”

His expression didn’t change while I prepared my complete response.

“I’ve just been… here,” I added, gesturing vaguely behind me like my room was suddenly a valid alibi.

“We need to always know where you are,” he said.

There was a pause, then he added, almost like it annoyed him to clarify, “Not because I care. I don’t. But he does.”

Of course.
