Chapter 216
(Daisy’s POV)
The room disappeared.
There was only the cold circle of metal resting against my temple and the terrifying realization that the next sound I heard might be the
last. Aria stared down at me without blinking.
“I’ve changed my mind.”
Her voice remained frighteningly calm.
“You’re more trouble alive than you’re worth.”
The barrel pressed a little harder against the side of my head before she tilted it ever so slightly.
“So…”
“I’ll just kill you.”
Every muscle in my body locked, and I swallowed hard.
“Please don’t.”
The words came out much smaller than I’d intended.
“I’ve been shot before,” I said hurriedly, my breathing already becoming uneven, “and I can honestly tell you it isn’t an experience I’d recommend. I mean… nobody really wants to get shot, obviously, but as someone who’s actually experienced it, I feel like I have a little
more insight than most people.”
Aria didn’t react.
“So…” I forced an awkward smile that even I didn’t believe. “Maybe we could… not do that?”
“Shut up.”
The words exploded from her.
Gone was the eerily pleasant smile she’d been wearing moments ago. Frustration now burned openly across her face as her brows drew together and she glared down at me with an intensity I’d never imagined seeing from her.
“I don’t need your nonsense.”
She leaned closer, and the pistol shifted slightly in her hand before she deliberately adjusted her grip. A sharp metallic click echoed
through the room as her thumb manipulated the weapon with practiced ease.
The sound cut straight through me.
“This,” she hissed, “is a serious moment.”
She held my gaze without the slightest hint of hesitation.
“And if you think for even one second that I won’t pull this trigger…”
Another tiny adjustment.
“…you’re mistaken.”
My breathing quickened.
She wasn’t bluffing. There wasn’t the smallest crack in her expression-no guilt, no uncertainty, no Aria. Only this stranger wearing my friend’s face.
“I can kill you,” she continued coldly, “and still get Adrian.”
She shrugged as though she were discussing tomorrow’s weather.
“I’ll simply wait here until he comes back.”
Her lips curved into something that wasn’t quite a smile.
“I’ll show you exactly how useless you are. I’ve got plenty of bullets, so this seems like a very convenient place to end your story.”
The room fell silent.
