Chapter 215
Both hands flew between his legs as his entire body folded in on itself before gravity finished the job and sent him tumbling backward down several steps.
My eyes became impossibly wide.
Both hands flew over my mouth.
“Oh my God.”
I stared at him for one stunned heartbeat.
“I’m so, so sorry!”
He definitely wasn’t listening.
He was busy having what appeared to be the worst day of his life.
“I hope you recover!”
I shouted, already running again.
The third man was still coming.
And unlike his friends…
He seemed determined not to embarrass himself.
Unlike the others, he didn’t shout or threaten. He simply climbed the stairs with long, deliberate strides, his eyes locked on me as though he had already decided how this would end.
I wasn’t about to let him decide for me.
I stumbled toward the nearest bedroom, my heartbeat pounding louder than my footsteps, and practically threw myself through the doorway. The room blurred past me as I reached for the door, dragging it shut with both hands.
Hope flared for exactly half a second.
Then something slammed against the other side.
The force rattled the entire frame and tore the handle from my grip before the door burst inward again. I stumbled backward with a startled cry while the man stepped inside, broad-shouldered and completely unfazed, as though smashing through doors was simply another task on today’s schedule.
He looked at me with the exhausted expression of someone whose patience had officially expired.
“Enough of your games.”
I immediately backed away.
My eyes darted wildly around the room.
Bed.
Wardrobe.
Curtains.
Desk.
Nothing.
Nothing.
Nothing-
A small standing fan.
It stood beside the desk, still plugged into the wall, humming softly as though completely unaware that my life was currently falling apart.
Perfect.
Or… not perfect.
It was all I had.
Without allowing myself time to reconsider, I grabbed the fan with both hands, unplugging nothing in the process, and swung it toward
him with considerably less elegance than I’d imagined.
“Stay back!”
He didn’t.
He simply raised one arm.
The fan struck it with a dull clang before bouncing harmlessly away, crashing onto the floor with enough noise to make me wince.
Well…
That had achieved absolutely nothing.
The man kept walking.
I kept retreating.
Until there was nowhere left to go except sideways.
He lunged.
Instinct took over.
I threw myself out of his path.
The man changed direction just enough to follow-
Then his boot caught something.
The electrical cord.
It had stretched tightly across the floor after the fan fell, and before either of us fully understood what was happening, his leg jerked
violently backward.
His balance disappeared.
His arms pinwheeled once.
Twice.
Then gravity made the final decision.
He crashed chest-first into the corner of the desk before ricocheting into a small table, which surrendered immediately beneath his weight with a loud crack that echoed around the room.
Silence followed.
I stared.
“…Oou.”
