I couldn’t breathe.

His phone chimed.
The sound cut straight through the moment. For a second he ignored it, but then another notification appeared, forcing his gaze downward. I watched him glance at the screen and then look again, and something changed.
It was small. Subtle. But I saw it. His brows pulled together as the tension slowly returned to his face, colder than before.
He tapped the screen and a video started playing.
I couldn’t see it from where I stood, and confusion crept into my chest as he turned the phone toward me and finished his sentence.
‘But maybe I should’ve never cared in the first place.”
My stomach dropped and I looked down at the screen, but for a second nothing made sense. Then my brain finally caught up.
