Chapter 153
(Daisy’s POV)
Escaping should not have been this difficult.
Yet somehow, every time I tried to avoid a situation lately, the situation developed legs, learned my schedule, and followed me anyway.
That was currently happening with Archer.
I moved quickly through one of the quieter hallways, weaving past the few students still lingering around campus. Most people had already migrated toward
the stadium for the championship opening, leaving entire sections of the university feeling strangely empty.
Normally I would have appreciated the silence.
Today it just gave my thoughts more room to run wild.
The problem was that I didn’t even know how to explain what had happened.
How was I supposed to explain DeLuca? Or why we had been that way?
I couldn’t explain it because I barely understood it myself.
So I kept walking.
Maybe if I walked fast enough, the universe would eventually get tired and leave me alone.
The universe, unfortunately, remained committedz I turned a corner and walked straight into somebody.
“Oh!”
I stumbled backward immediately and strong hands lifted slightly. Not grabbing or touching me.
Just making a calming gesture.
“Daisy.”
I froze.
Of course.
Archer.
He had followed another route and intercepted me, and now he looked relieved to have finally found me.
“I just want to talk.”
My eyes closed briefly.
No.
Not this.-
Not now.
“There is nothing to talk about.”
“There definitely is.”
His voice remained calm.
“What happened on the field wasn’t normal.”
I immediately tried moving past him.
He stepped sideways.
Not aggressively, but just enough to stay in front of me.
“Archer.”
“Daisy.”
I stared at him.
He stared right back.
“What’s happening?” he asked.
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me.”
“It’s complicated.”
“I can tell.”
I sighed heavily and rubbed my forehead.
The headache that had been haunting me all week seemed delighted by this conversation.
“Look,” I said, “just leave it alone.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because some guy I don’t know showed up looking like he wanted to start a freaking war.”
I opened my mouth.
He continued.
“He showed up threatening you.”
“That wasn’t-”
“It absolutely was.”
His brows pulled together.
“You were yelling.”
I looked away.
“I didn’t yell.”
“Daisy.”
‘I occasionally increased my volume.”
‘You were shouting, Daisy.”
‘Okay, maybe I was shouting.”
He nodded.
‘Exactly.”
