But the bodyguard had no choice but to say it.
Gavin glanced at the wheelchair.
It was the same model as Skyla’s.
When it came to the fine art of getting under someone’s skin, it was hard to find anyone on earth who could outmatch William. 1
Gavin remained stone–faced. “Just set it aside.”
The bodyguard positioned the wheelchair and added, “I also saw Mr. Zeller’s assistant going to handle the discharge paperwork for Mrs. Xander.”
Gavin cut his eyes toward the bed. Sure enough, Chris’s expression had turned dangerously grim.
After Winter finished breakfast, she went to the bathroom.
Just like yesterday, there were only a few tiny specks of blood. The amount wasn’t like her usual cycle.
What exactly was going on? Could it really be a lingering effect of the hypothermia?
She pushed the thought aside, telling herself it might normalize by tomorrow. It had happened once or twice before, so Winter didn’t think too much about it. She started changing clothes.
By the time she was dressed, William’s assistant had already packed up her things.
“Let’s go.” William quickly wrapped a scarf around her neck. “Don’t catch a chill.”
Winter followed him toward the door.
When they reached it, she suddenly stopped.
William’s brows tightened. Was she still thinking about that bastard next door? If he had known it would come to this, he should have run Chris over that day and been done with it.
He was about to lecture her when Winter turned back and asked, “Where’s the rest of my roasted beef sandwich I didn’t finish earlier?”
William froze, then let out a sharp, incredulous snort. Typical. She was a foodie to the end. But that was a good sign. If she could focus on her stomach, she could forget about Chris and move on with her life.
“Right here, Ms. Scott,” the assistant said, handing her a bag with the sandwich inside.
Winter took it and bit down hard, then followed William into the elevator.
The van was parked outside the inpatient lobby. When the sliding door opened, William walked ahead of Winter and shielded her from the wind.

“That’s Chris Xander, the head of the Xander family, isn’t it?”
They were both wearing masks, but their height and undeniable aura still stood out. It didn’t take long for the crowd to pivot their attention, wondering if they were celebrities.
Someone even made a bold guess, “Do you think it’s a star coming in for a secret pregnancy check?”
“Look at them! He’s obviously looking out for her. They’ve got to be a couple. You might be onto something.”
“They look so good together.”
Not far away, Chris’s grip tightened around his cane until his knuckles turned white.
