Chris tilted his head slightly, as if nothing were wrong, and gave Gavin a calm instruction.
“Seal off the entire area. Trace the source of the explosives.”
“Yes, sir.”

By the time Skyla arrived at the hospital, she pushed the door open without knocking.
Chris was sitting upright on the hospital bed.
The room was brightly lit. A black overcoat was draped loosely over his shoulders. A cigarette rested between his lips. There was something rough about him that didn’t match his usual composed image.
A faint shadow of stubble darkened his jaw. He wasn’t wearing his glasses. Without them, he looked less refined and more dangerously untamed.
But what truly made her breath hitch was the wound across his shoulder and back. The flesh was torn open, raw and severe.
“Chris, you’re hurt?”
His injuries weren’t minor. The damage to his shoulder and back was deep, and his thigh had taken a hard impact against the cliffside. It wasn’t something Zac could fully treat in a helicopter.
On the flight back, Zac had done what he could with the emergency kit. Now, in the hospital, professionals were cleaning and dressing the wound.
The doctor was applying medication to his shoulder when Skyla entered.
Chris had heard the wheelchair outside before the door opened. He pulled the coat higher over his shoulders and looked past her at Dominic standing behind the chair.
“Didn’t I tell you to keep her from coming?”
“I didn’t let her follow you into the mountains. That counts as keeping her from coming,” Dominic replied, barely stifling a yawn. “She insisted on seeing you once she heard you’re hurt. I couldn’t stop her. I’m
dead tired here.”
“Then you might as well go drop dead.”
Dominic choked on that and muttered a curse under his breath.
Chris stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray. When he looked back at Skyla, her eyes were red.
He frowned faintly. “It’s minor.”
“Minor?” Dominic stepped forward and pulled back the collar of Chris’s shirt to glance at the wound. “If
Noticing Chris’s complexion looked off, he reached up and pressed a hand to his forehead. “You’ve got a fever.”
“I’ve already taken something for it.” Chris brushed his hand away, took a sip, and set the glass on the nightstand.
Dominic turned as if to leave, but Chris called him back again.
A shadow flickered across Skyla’s vision as Dominic stopped mid–step.
Dominic sighed. “Can you just say everything at once? I was going to check on Zac. I heard he’s hurt too.”
Chris lifted his gaze lazily. “Go.”
Dominic left the room, muttering under his breath as the door shut behind him.
Chris reached for the water again, but Skyla was quicker. She picked up the glass and held it out to him.
She looked up at him, her eyes full of lingering fear.
“Promise me,” she said softly, “you won’t do something that dangerous again. I was terrified.”
