“Have you ever heard the alternative explanation of death people share online?” Winter asked quietly. Her eyes flicked once more to his right hand, which had loosened slightly around the detonator.

The man looked up at her, confusion clouding his face.

“Death isn’t the end,” she continued gently. “It’s just that when you wake up, Elsa has already gone to work. When you sit down to eat, she’s out for a run. And when you go looking for her, she’s just gotten home. She’s still beside you. You just can’t see her anymore.

“But she can see you. Everything you’re doing right now, she can see.”

“She’s really still with me?” he asked, glancing around blankly. The sky had grown darker. The temperature in the mountains was dropping fast.

Winter held her bruised throat and nodded firmly. “Of course.

“You brought her favorite cake. She can taste it.

“You said she liked lighting candles before eating cake, right?” Winter’s voice softened, almost like an older sister coaxing a child. “Let’s light the candles for her. Okay?”

Chris’s expression tightened.

The man looked at Winter through tear–filled eyes, hope flickering faintly.

Winter cautiously reached for his left hand and guided him toward the tombstone.

“Was blue her favorite color?” she asked gently.

He nodded, a fragile smile forming. “She said that after she died, she wanted to rest somewhere she could see the most beautiful blue. I found this place for her.”

“It’s beautiful,” Winter said. “In spring, this place will be covered in flowers. No girl dislikes flowers. Elsa

loved them too, didn’t she?”

He nodded again, choking back tears.

Winter led him to the grave.

The lighter was still in his possession. Even if she managed to grab the detonator, as long as he still had the lighter and explosives strapped to him, they wouldn’t be safe.

She released his hand and bent to pick up the blue cake.

“You should place the candles yourself,” she said softly. “She’ll be happy.”

For a moment, it was as if he could see Elsa standing there, smiling at him.

His right hand still gripped the detonator. With his left, he picked up the candle package from the ground,

unwrapped it, and pressed the candles into the center of the cake.

Then he took out the lighter.

“Elsa, I’m coming with you.”

Winter’s blood ran cold.

He still had another detonator.

A thunderous explosion ripped through the mountain.

Flames burst outward as the shockwave shook the entire hillside.

Loose gravel and jagged stones shifted violently beneath her feet.

Winter slipped.

The ground gave way beneath her.
