Chapter 47
When Winter woke up, daylight was already streaming in through the windows.
She tried to sit up, only for a sharp headache to hit her. She pressed a hand to her forehead and fell back onto the bed. If the club hadn’t belonged to Dominic, she would have suspected she had been served
fake alcohol.
But why was she in her room at Blackwood Manor?
After she got drunk last night, Wendy had taken her to the restroom. Winter rubbed her temples, trying to piece things together. Aside from Wendy, only scattered fragments surfaced in her memory, all of them involving Chris. As for what they had done or what they had said, she had no recollection at all.
Her thoughts stalled. Instinctively, she checked herself. Her body felt normal. She was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday.
She lay there for a moment, mind blank. Then she licked her dry lips and reached for her phone to check the time.
It was already noon.
At least it was Saturday.
Just then, the bedroom door opened quietly. Mrs. Young peeked in and brightened when she saw Winter awake. She pushed the door wider. “You’re awake, ma’am. How are you feeling?”
The headache was nothing serious. Winter was used to brushing off pain. “I’m fine,” she said as she sat up. “Did Chris bring me back?”
Mrs. Young nodded. “Yes, but after Mr. Xander got you settled, he left.”
Left?
Winter threw off the covers and got out of bed, barefoot, heading straight out. She had been wearing socks last night and must have kicked them off in her sleep.
Mrs. Young hurried after her. “Ma’am, put on your slippers. The floor’s cold.”
But she couldn’t keep up with Winter’s pace.
Winter walked straight out, as if she had somewhere specific in mind. She pushed open the master bedroom door and strode in without hesitation, her steps quick and purposeful.
“Ma’am…”
Before Mrs. Young could finish, Winter swept past her again, storming out and heading for Chris’s study. Mrs. Young had no choice but to follow.
Winter walked straight to the desk.

Mrs. Young watched her tightly furrowed brows. “Ma’am, are you looking for something?”
Winter shook her head.
Unfortunately, the baby did not survive.
“Grandma’s sick?”
Winter had just stepped inside and asked Mr. White, the housekeeper, whether Mrs. Xander Sr. was up from her nap, only to learn that she was ill.
She immediately headed upstairs toward the bedroom. “When did this happen? Why wasn’t I informed?”
“Mrs. Xander Sr. said it was nothing serious,” Mr. White replied as he followed behind her. “She didn’t want to worry anyone.”
