Chapter 448
Winter’s hand fell.
The black mask and fake scars dropped to the floor.
She stared at the face in front of her in a daze. Then she clenched her teeth, only to let out a laugh so faint it was almost inaudible.
“It was you…”
So “Roy” really was someone she had known all along.
He was Chris’s most trusted right-hand man. More than that, he was one of the few people who had been through life-and-death situations with him. Of course he knew the origin of her favorite motto.
At first, she had thought Roy’s silhouette looked familiar. When his guard was down, she had tested him. She had called him “Gavin” right to his face.
Back then, he hadn’t reacted at all.
He had been so calm, as if he had never even heard the name.
Now it seemed he wasn’t only good in a fight. He was also an excellent actor.
Gavin silently removed his black baseball cap. His black hair was thick and slightly coarse. He looked at Winter, his gaze dark and steady.
“It’s me. Codename G.”
Gavin.
Zion felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He froze where he stood.
But little by little, all the things that had never made sense before began to click into place.
No wonder Gavin had known so much about his old injuries.
No wonder Gavin’s figure had seemed so familiar in the dark.
No wonder it had felt familiar when Gavin patted his head to calm him down.
So that big idiot Gavin was G all along.
Zion quickly raised a hand and slapped his own face a few times.
It hurt.
It tingled.
This wasn’t a nightmare.
On the bed, Winter’s eyes trembled. She slowly took a deep breath.
He had pretended to be mute in front of her.
He had pretended not to know her.
And he had even pretended to be injured.
Winter glanced at the crutch in his hand. Then she grabbed a pillow and threw it straight at the crutch.
The second Zion met those sharp dark-brown eyes, his clenched fists loosened in spite of himself.
That presence.
That look.
There was no faking it.
Gavin really was G.
Zion clutched his chest, anger boiling inside him, but he didn’t dare say another word.
Winter was different from him.
If he had been stupid, that was on him.
But Winter had been kept completely in the dark. If Zion hadn’t kept steering her in the wrong direction, she might have noticed the inconsistencies much earlier.
“Before New Year’s, Fabian’s men chased me onto the bridge over the river,” Winter said. “‘Roy’ came to save me. But you and he appeared at the same time. How do you explain that?”
That incident was the very reason she had finally stopped suspecting Gavin. This was the real world.
One person couldn’t be in two places at once.
Gavin’s gloved hand hung still at his side.
“Before that, you were already suspicious of me. So Mr. Xander arranged for one of our men to pretend to be ‘Roy’ and clear your doubts.”
