Chapter 411
In the woods, Chris held Winter close.
Rain slid down his cheek to his chin, then dripped onto the weatherproof jacket she was wearing.
Drip.
Drip.
It matched the beat of her heart.
Chris held the gun in one hand and kept his other hand against the back of her head. His voice was low.
“Scared?”
“Hmm?” Winter looked up at him.
Just then, a drop of rain slipped from his chin and nearly fell onto her face. Chris moved his hand from the back of her head and swept it away with the back of his hand.
“Your heart is beating fast.”
“What would I be scared of?” Winter looked straight into his dark eyes. “That you can’t beat Garrett?”
Chris’s eyes were so dark they seemed bottomless. He clenched his jaw and let out a low, mocking laugh.
That expression made Winter’s mind go blank for a second. Where had she seen that smile before? It felt familiar.
It was a little wicked, but also strangely indulgent.
The moment she realized she was staring at him, she quickly looked away.
Chris suddenly tightened his arm around her. When he heard her breath catch in surprise, a faint laugh slipped from deep in his throat.
It vanished almost instantly, as if it had never happened.
Winter wasn’t sure if she had imagined it.
But the next second, Chris lightly patted the hood over her head.
“Wait here for me.”
Right now, if they didn’t move, Garrett and Fabian, who were hiding behind the trees across from them, wouldn’t move either.
But the gunfire and explosions were getting closet, and the helicopters were moving with them
If they kept hiding here, they would be found soon
And if Fabian’s men reached this part of the woods first, Chris and Winter would be surrounded
Then Winter said with quiet certainty, “You promised you’d get me out of this forest soon. Keep your word.‘
Chris looked at her for a long moment. Then his lips curved slightly, and he said in a low voice, “Stay hidden.”
Behind a tree, Garrett had tied a strip of cloth around his injured arm to slow the bleeding.
Fortunately, it was not his dominant arm.
Shielding Fabian behind him, he said, “Don’t worry, Boss Kane. If you want Chris dead, ‘nandle it. “
“Be careful,” Fabian said, glancing at his arm. “I’d rather have you alive than Chris dead.
Garrett gave a quiet hum and said indifferently, “I’ll bandage it when we get back.”
Fabian had saved his life.
As far as Garrett was concerned, his life belonged to Fabian.
Forget Chris’s life. If Fabian wanted Garrett’s own lite, Garrett would give it without hesitation.
The guard was getting closer.
Garrett also knew that if Chris’s men reached the woods first, it would be much harder to get Fabian out safely.
