Chapter 405
Winter felt a sudden heat on her forehead. She wanted to raise her hand and rub it, but in the next second, Chris had already released her waist and locked his large hand firmly around hers.
Her hand was ice–cold.
His was warm.
“One, two, three!”
The instant Winter’s body was thrown upward by the force of Chris’s arm, the warmth gripping her hand disappeared.
Chris let go.
Winter was thrown toward the edge of the woods on the opposite side. She grabbed the hanging vines with all her strength, bit down on the gun, and climbed up with both hands and feet.
Just as she managed to pull herself onto the ground at the edge of the woods, a sharp crack sounded behind her, followed by the rumble of falling rocks.
The hand holding the gun froze.
Blood seemed to rush backward into her heart.
Thud.
Her heart slammed so hard that her vision went black.
She whipped around.
The tree Chris had been holding on to had been ripped out by the roots, tumbling down the cliff with rocks and dirt.
Below was a bottomless drop.
And the man who had been holding on to the tree was gone.
A raindrop slipped from the treetop and landed on Winter’s lashes.
Her lips turned pale and stiff in an instant. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
Then the vine near her foot suddenly tugged.
The next second, she saw a tall man in a black weatherproof jacket and night–vision goggles climbing up quickly, one hand gripping a vine.
Rainwater slid from her eyes.
Winter pressed a hand over her wildly beating heart and gritted her teeth hard.
Chris stood up and looked at Winter’s dirt–smudged face and red, wet eyes.
His entire chest went numb.
Without the slightest hesitation, he strode up to her, cupped the back of her head, lowered his head, and kissed her hard.
Then he reached for the gun in her hand. As he released her lips, he pulled the trigger and fired into the woods.
“I told you I’d be right behind you.”
That face was identical to his own.
When Gavin had returned to the villa, the bodyguards told him that before he arrived, a man who looked and sounded exactly like him had pretended to be him and taken Skyla away.
The news had hit him like a lightning strike.
His parents had died when he and Garrett were five. After that, the two brothers had only had each other at the border.
When they were ten, they had been in an accident. Gavin had believed Garrett was dead.
He had never imagined Garrett was still alive.
Not only alive, but alive and well.
And now Garrett had become Fabian’s right–hand man.
Gavin’s expression turned terrifyingly cold.
Did Garrett have any idea what he was doing?
Staring toward the woods where Fabian and Garrett had disappeared, Gavin stood and said to the person beside him, “You take over. Fly toward the spot where Mr. Xander fell. Have the other helicopters cover you.”
