Chapter 370
Winter wondered whether Chris had played a part in pushing Zac and Nina’s engagement forward.
William looked in the direction Zac had left and said meaningfully, “There goes another brokenhearted man.”
After parting with Winter, Zac drove onto the bridge over the river.
It had rained for the past two days, and the river had risen a lot.
Zac drove onto the bridge and stopped the car.
From the pocket of his suit pants, he took out a diamond ring.
It was the ring he had prepared for Winter four years ago.
Unfortunately, he had never gotten the chance to use it then.
And now, he never would.
He watched the diamond catch the sunlight, bright and dazzling, just like her eyes when they lit up.
“Winnie…”
Zac lowered his head and kissed the ring, as if he were kissing her eyes one last time.
On one side was his father.
On the other was Winter.
Chris had forced him to choose.
Tears slid down his face without a sound.
Then he threw the diamond ring out the window.
But the instant it cleared the bridge railing, Zac’s heart lurched. His face went pale. He shoved the car door open and stumbled after it.
He gripped the railing with both hands and stared down at the rushing river below.
The ring had already vanished into the water, swept away by the muddy current.
By the time the medical team finished collecting Skyla’s bone marrow sample, the sky was already bright.
Chris estimated that Winter should be waking soon and was preparing to return to Blackwood Manor.
But then he received a call from the hospital.
Richie had developed a high fever.
Chris rushed to the hospital, quickly disinfected, changed into sterile protective gear, and strode into the ICU. The heavy door closed behind him.
He entered the large sterile room that had been specially built for Richie.
Inside, doctors and nurses were taking turns holding the little boy. His face was flushed from the fever, his eyes squeezed shut as he cried and fussed nonstop.
Since Richie’s birth, Chris had seen so many test results that he no longer needed the doctor to explain most of them.
The illness was progressing too quickly.
The doctor analyzed the situation. “It’s likely related to the toxins in Richie’s body. If we can’t find a matching donor soon, then removing the toxins from his system as quickly as possible would still help.”
Only after Richie was deeply asleep did Chris leave the ICU.
He changed out of the protective gear, his body drenched in sweat.
He looked back at the heavy door.
Just then, Gavin stepped out of the elevator and quickly walked over to him. He lowered his voice and said something.
A drop of sweat slid from Chris’s brow onto his lashes.
A cold, murderous glint flashed through his dark eyes.
So it was true.
He strode toward the changing room, his cool voice wrapped in frost.
“Draft a public clarification statement.”
