“Impossible.”
Her head lowered as tears welled in her eyes.
Her vision blurred.
Chris wouldn’t abandon her.
There was no way he would refuse to see her.
Didn’t she still carry the blood that mattered so much to him?
Just like before, whenever something happened to her, he would rush to her side, stay with her, personally instruct the doctors to take care of her, and have rare medicines and the best ingredients prepared for her.
Just like the caregiver always said, she was the one Chris kept closest to his heart.
This time would be no different. She had thrown up so much blood. He would only be more anxious than before, more protective, more attentive.
Her voice grew from a hoarse murmur into a shrill outburst. “That’s impossible. There’s no way Chris doesn’t want to see me. You’re lying to me. All of you are lying to me!”
Bracing herself with both hands, she pushed herself upright in bed. Her hair hung loose, covering half her face as she cried. “You’re all working together to deceive me. Chris must have had something important to deal with. That’s the only reason he had to leave, right?”
Her scream from moments ago had startled the doctor. After taking a second to recover, he saw how agitated she was and quickly said, “Ms. Jasper, you really shouldn’t get this upset right now.”
“Shut up!” Skyla snapped.
The force of it twisted her features into something almost frightening.
She was breathing hard now, her red–rimmed eyes locked on Gavin.
A stripe of sunlight stretched across the hallway wall.
Morning had come.
An entire night had passed. Had Chris really never shown up at all, or had he only just left?
Suddenly, she turned frantically to look for something. “My phone. Where’s my phone? My phone!”
“Here, Ms. Jasper.” The caregiver hurriedly handed it to her. “Please, slow down.”
Skyla had lost too much blood, and now her emotions were completely out of control. Her fingers shook so badly she could barely hold the phone as she opened the call screen and dialed Chris’s number.
But the automated message made it painfully clear that her number had been blocked.
Still unwilling to accept it, she grabbed the caregiver’s phone instead and quickly typed in the familiar number

Why would he refuse to see her?
After the doctor stepped out, the caregiver looked at Skyla, who seemed almost hollowed out, and immediately began worrying about losing her job.
She quickly tried to reassure her. “Ms. Jasper, Gavin must have made that up. Please don’t take it to heart. Mr. Xander probably just has something important to deal with. His phone being off might just mean he’s in a meeting. Ugh!”
A hand suddenly clamped around her throat.
“Did I ask you to talk?”
Skyla’s face loomed in front of her, twisted with fury.
The caregiver’s eyes flew wide with terror. How could Skyla be this weak and still have that much strength?
If she weren’t sick, how terrifying would that strength be?
She tried to beg, but with her throat pinned tight, all that came out was a thin, strangled gasp.
Skyla’s grip only tightened. “Every time I’m in a bad mood, you keep yapping in my ear. If you weren’t stupid enough to be easy to use, do you think I would’ve kept you around this long?”
