Chapter 298
But now, whether she wanted to or not, she would have to accept it.
After fastening the bracelet around her wrist, Steve lifted her hand and kissed her wrist. Then he held the bracelet up in front of her like he was showing it off.
“It’s no worse than the sapphire brooch Chris gave you, is it?”
The scene from the auction at Windham Gardens flashed through her mind.
“I noticed you kept staring at that brooch. Do you like it? I’ll bid on it for you.
“It’s only a hundred million. I can afford it. You don’t need to worry about the price.”
So it had all been an act.
“So you knew…” Winter bit down hard. She could already feel something changing in her body, but she couldn’t
let Steve notice.
She had to buy time. She had to recover enough strength to fight back.
But whatever Steve had forced her to take was far stronger than she had imagined.
Steve leaned close to her ear and whispered, “Because after that car accident, I was the one who picked up that brooch from the scene.”
Winter’s mind was beginning to blur. She bit her tongue hard enough to draw blood. Through the haze, she vaguely heard Steve muttering something.
“No wonder Chris didn’t… at the auction… he had no receipt to prove it was his… because he made it himself…”
She couldn’t make sense of what he was saying. At that point, she could barely hear him at all.
All of her energy was focused on resisting the drug taking hold of her.
A fierce heat spread through her body, almost enough to shatter her self-control. She bit her tongue again, and the sharp pain, along with the taste of blood, gave her a little strength back.
But no matter how hard she tried to hold on, the sweat on her forehead and the drops running down her neck gave her away.
“Does it feel awful?” Steve gently wiped the sweat from her neck with his fingers. “Be good. You’ll feel better soon. I’ll take care of you.”
Then he reached for her, trying to pull her into his arms and kiss her.
“Get away from me!”
With great effort, Winter rolled off the bed and struggled to her feet. A wave of dizziness hit her so hard she could barely stand.
In her hazy state, a memory flashed across her mind. The dark open sea. The night she had been taken hostage. A flag torn down by bullets had fallen in front of her and blocked her view. Before it even hit the ground, the man holding her hostage had already been shot dead.
Was it Roy?
Or was it…
She clenched her teeth and tried to throw off the blanket, but whatever strength and awareness she had left were being swallowed up. Her body shook uncontrollably.
Steve’s face was now smeared with blood.
Drops of blood fell steadily from the black gloves of the man standing over him.
