Roy’s hand tightened slightly around his phone.

Winter didn’t notice. It was far too subtle to catch.

She said to Roy, “Before, someone had something they could use against me. I’m taking care of all of that now, so it’ll be easier to leave when the time comes.”

As she spoke, she lowered her head and sniffed softly.

“It feels awful to have your life in someone else’s hands.”

Then she looked up and took a deep breath.

“There’s a whole world out there. Just thinking about it makes me feel free.”

Roy stayed quiet beside her. After a moment, he held his phone out to her.

She looked at the words on the screen.

“Have you decided where you want to go to start over?”

Winter thought for a few seconds, then shook her head.

“Not yet. I’ll probably move abroad.”

A faint crease formed between his brows.

“Do you still want to be a war correspondent?”

Winter looked at him in surprise. She hadn’t expected him to remember that her dream was to become a war correspondent.

“Maybe,” she said. “I still haven’t figured it out.”

“All right. When you leave, let me know. I’ll come see you off.”

Winter smiled.

“You’re so busy. By the time I leave, you might be away on assignment again. It’s okay. We’re friends. You don’t have to do that.”

Besides, she was planning to leave quietly. She might not even tell William.

Roy held the phone out to her again.

“Even if I can’t make it, tell me anyway.”

Thinking about the time they had spent together, Winter realized that this cold, sharp-tongued coach had slowly become someone she genuinely trusted. In the end, she nodded.

“Okay. I’ll tell you before I go.”

She checked the time and said, “It’s almost lunch. Let’s go get something to eat. My treat.

Behind the mask, Roy’s throat moved slightly as he swallowed. Then he typed another line on his phone.

Winter froze for a second, but she did not think too much of it. She simply said, “Could you please check again? I’m definitely married.”

The clerk had already run the search twice, but she turned back to the computer and entered the information one more time.

Still nothing came up.

“Please give me a moment.”

She picked up Winter’s paperwork and hurried into the back office.

A little while later, she came back to the window, leaned in slightly, and handed Winter back her marriage

certificate and the rest of the documents.

“Ms. Scott, according to our records, there’s no legal record of your marriage. This marriage certificate is invalid.”
