Hearing that Winter needed a favor from her mom, Wendy quickly pulled out her phone. “I can send you her contact.”

“I already have it,” Winter said, giving her phone a little wave. She had already reached out to Wendy’s mother before turning in her resignation and had paid the retainer.

Wendy stared at her. “If you already had her contact, why even bring it up?”

Winter smiled, obviously teasing. “Because I get shy meeting the parents for the first time.”

The tips of Wendy’s ears turned red. “You’re impossible. What do you mean, meeting the parents?”

At lunch, Wendy listened as Winter talked to her mother about filing for divorce. She glanced at Winter, her feelings complicated.

After lunch, the two of them headed back to the station.

In the elevator, Wendy finally said, “I really thought Chris was good to you. That night we were drinking at Nocturne, when you got drunk and he came to pick you up, I’m serious, the way he looked at you seemed so gentle.”

Then her expression darkened again. “He really knows how to put on an act.”

Winter laughed at Wendy’s indignant rambling and pulled her into a hug. “Okay, okay. Don’t be mad. I’m fine.”

She lifted a hand and smoothed Wendy’s hair.

Wendy let out a sigh, feeling sorry for her.

“The first time we all hung out, you got drunk and wrapped yourself around a utility pole, confessing your love. I heard you calling Chris’s name, and I thought you were just some lovestruck girl with a crush on him. I had no idea you’d actually grown up in the Xander family.”

That night, Winter had cried so hard. She had looked so wronged, so heartbroken.

The memory had stayed with Wendy ever since. She had never realized someone could look that devastated over love.

Winter must have loved Chris so much.

“Do you regret it?” Wendy’s voice came just as the elevator doors opened.

Regret.

Winter shook her head and said nothing.

That afternoon, she got a phone call.

Winter got up early. Sunlight spilled across the windowsill. It was a beautiful day.

Her parents probably would have liked a day like this.

She drove to the funeral home.

“Hi, I’m here to pick up my parents’ urns. Where do I go to handle the paperwork?”

After asking about the process, Winter collected their urns and returned to her car.

At Blackwood Manor, the main house had been badly damaged in the fire, and the repairs were going to take a long time. Chris had moved into another building on the estate.

He was in his study, going through documents, when Gavin knocked and stepped inside.

Stopping at the desk, Gavin said, “Mr. Xander, Mrs. Xander took her parents’ ashes to the coast.”

Chris’s grip tightened around the pen in his hand. His lips pressed into a hard line.

Gavin paused, then added, “She scattered their ashes into the ocean.”
