Chapter 235
Mr. White beckoned to General, and the dog immediately bounded over, looking up at him expectantly.
“After you married Mr. Xander, General was always under my care,” Mr. White said. “He won’t let anyone else at the estate touch him, so I brought him here too. Since you’re here, I thought he could keep you company.”
A warm feeling spread through Winter’s chest. She didn’t tell Mr. White that once Mrs. Young’s family took her ashes and the belongings packed up from Blackwood Manor back home tomorrow, she would be leaving too.
That evening, Skyla had just finished showering in the bathroom.
By the time the caregiver went in, Skyla already had her robe on and was tying the sash neatly around her waist with practiced fingers.
The caregiver carried her to the bed and sat her down. As she blow–dried her hair, she said, “Ms. Jasper, I saw the news today. That awful housekeeper at Blackwood Manor is dead.”
Skyla looked down at her nails. “Oh? How did she die?”
“I heard it was brutal. Her mouth was smashed in.” Even saying it made the caregiver shudder. It was horrifying.
Skyla let out a soft scoff and took the hair dryer from her. “I’ll do it myself.”
“Then I’ll go clean up the bathroom.”
The caregiver turned and went back inside.
Skyla held the dryer in one hand and ran the other through her hair, the roar of hot air filling her ears.
A moment later, the caregiver came back out carrying the laundry basket. She paused, riffling through the clothes, and said in confusion, “Ms. Jasper, why do these socks look like they have blood on them?”
The sound of the dryer stopped abruptly.
The room fell into a strange, heavy silence.
Skyla exhaled and said evenly, “Throw them away.”
Just then, the sound of a car engine came from the courtyard.
No one usually came to the Westbury house.
Skyla’s eyes lit up, and a soft, feminine sweetness came over her face. “Is Chris here?”
She swept her hair to one side and adjusted the front of her robe, only to hear the caregiver, who had run to the window, say, “No, it’s not Mr. Xander. It’s Mr. Jasper.”
“What are you doing here?” Skyla looked at the man in front of her with no warmth of a daughter and not the slightest respect for him as a father.
She couldn’t even get a chance to have dinner with Chris herself, and yet Winter had somehow gotten that chance instead. The anger from earlier still hadn’t settled.
She flicked her hand lightly. “Leave us.
The caregiver and the bodyguards stepped out of the living room.
Victor picked up his teacup and took an unhurried sip.
“The Xander family already handed your company plenty of projects, didn’t they?” The smile on Skyla’s face slowly disappeared, turning cold. “Was that still not enough? Or was everything you got through me still not enough after what it cost me?
“Victor Jasper, tell me. From beginning to end, what have you ever earned by your own ability?”
Victor’s hand stilled around the teacup.
Then Skyla spoke again, her voice full of scorn.
“You used to send my mom into other men’s beds. And now you want to use me to win business too. How are you still shameless enough to go on living like this?”
