Chris lowered his eyes to her face. The fever had started to break, and the flush had faded from her cheeks, leaving her looking pale. Her lowered lashes trembled faintly, and there was still that same stubborn streak in her expression.
“Then you must be very capable,” he said evenly.
Winter’s lashes flickered.
What was that supposed to mean? Was he talking to her like she was three?
The phone kept ringing, but Chris made no move to answer it. Instead, he brought his hand to her mouth, three pills resting in his palm.
“If you’re that capable, then take them.”
Her head was already pounding from the cold, and hearing him say that in such a calm, infuriating tone made her feel like her skull was about to split open from anger.
She weakly lifted a hand, trying to take the pills from him. “What I meant was, I’d feel bad keeping you from answ…”
Before she could finish, Chris cupped the back of her head with his other hand and pushed all three pills into her mouth, cutting off the rest of her words.
The tablets dissolved against her tongue, so bitter she couldn’t even speak. She frowned hard, half convinced he had done it on purpose.
Downstairs, Gavin’s phone started ringing.
He glanced at the caller ID. His expression stayed cool, but he answered anyway.
Skyla’s voice came through the line, tight with emotion she was clearly trying to hold back. “Where’s Chris?”
Gavin stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the endless white snow. “Ms. Jasper, Mr. Xander doesn’t like being watched. Pull back the people you have following him. Otherwise, if I have to deal with them myself, I can’t promise they’ll walk away in one piece.”
“I just want to know what he’s doing every day.” Skyla sounded close to tears. “Is Winter at Blackwood Manor?”
“Mrs. Xander is the lady of Blackwood Manor. Isn’t it perfectly normal for her to be here?”
Gavin pulled his gaze back from the window. “You should focus on recovering at the hospital. Mr. Xander doesn’t like people who act on their own or refuse to listen.”
After he hung up, his sharp hearing caught a noise from upstairs.

It sounded like something had hit the floor.
In the bedroom, a glass had fallen onto the hardwood. Water spread across the floor.
The thought hit her, and she immediately threw back the blanket and tried to get out of bed.
But in her anger, she had completely forgotten she was still hooked up to the IV. As she sat up, the line pulled, the needle shifted, and the sharp pain drained what little color she had left.
The moment she fell back onto the bed, Chris’s expression went cold.
She was stubborn as hell. Even sick, she still had this much temper.
Once the worst of the pain passed, Winter tried to get up again. This time, Chris pressed one hand down on her shoulder while steadying the swaying IV bag with the other.
His voice dropped. “Are you still going to keep this up?”
Winter looked up at him. Her eyes were wet and red, whether from pain or from everything else surging through her, even she couldn’t tell.

She swallowed and whispered hoarsely, “None of your business… Chris… get lost…”
