If Steve really was working with Fabian, the implications were unthinkable.
Winter didn’t even want to imagine something like that happening with someone she had grown up with.
But right now, she couldn’t let a single hint show on her face. She definitely couldn’t let anyone else notice either. If she tipped them off now, it would only make things harder for Chris to investigate.
The rot inside the Xander family had to be cut out.
Winter looked at him with clear interest. “Oh? And how exactly are you planning to help me, Mr. Steve?” Calling him Mr. Steve instead of Mr. Xander made his position in the company very clear. In the Xander Corporation, he stood below Chris.
In terms of money and influence, he was below him too.
But all at once, Winter remembered the auction at Windham Gardens that night. Back then, when Chris had bid a hundred million for that sapphire brooch, Steve had told her he could match it, even at that
price.
She believed Steve had money. Coming up with a hundred million in assets was probably not impossible for him. But at an auction, bids had to be signed for on the spot, and Chris could have kept raising the price. She did not believe Steve had that kind of money to throw around.
Now that she thought back on it, had he just been trying to save face in front of her, or did he really have that kind of power?
Steve reached out and hooked a finger around the press badge hanging from her chest. His tone turned suggestive. “Be with me, and I’ll give you everything I’ve got.”
Out of nowhere, a pen came flying in and struck the back of Steve’s hand.
He let go of her badge with a wince, then looked up coldly at Chris, who had just stepped out of a Bentley not far away and was handing a freshly signed document to the person beside him.
The pen that should have been in Chris’s hand had hit the back of Steve’s hand, then fallen to the ground and rolled away.
A red mark immediately rose on the back of Steve’s hand.
A cold look flashed through his eyes.
Winter followed his gaze and, without warning, found herself looking straight into a pair of deep, unreadable eyes. She looked away at once and tugged lightly on her coworker’s arm.
“Come on.”
She had only taken a couple of steps when Skyla’s warm, smiling voice drifted over from behind her.

Then she looked at Chris and asked carefully, “Am I getting in your way by being here?”
After Winter and her coworkers finished gathering footage, she found a good spot to stand. Behind her, she heard two executives from other companies talking quietly.
“How come the Davis family didn’t show up today? Isn’t Zac Davis one of Chris’s closest friends?”
“You haven’t heard? The Davises quietly snatched a billion–dollar parcel out from under the Xanders. People are saying the two families are at odds now. Some even think the relationship’s completely fallen apart.”
“No way.”
The other man shook his head. “Believe it. And it’s not just the Davises. The Zellers are the same. I think the Davises and the Zellers might be joining forces against the Xanders. The Xanders have been taking the best opportunities for years. Those two families have probably had enough.”
“Chris Xander’s always been arrogant, but all these years, nobody’s really managed to knock him down. This time, though, that might change.”
