Winter’s once–bright eyes now looked like two hollow, bottomless pits. Her nails dug hard into the wooden plank in her hands, but her whole body was trembling so badly that even her fingers shook.

Then she suddenly lowered her head and laughed. She laughed as she shook her head, her face white as paper, without a trace of color. Tears fell and landed on the tip of Chris’s shoe.

“So I was wondering how Skyla could possibly have the guts to do something like this.”

Now everything made sense.

The violent emotions twisting through her chest felt like they were tearing her soul away from her body. It hurt too much. Winter could barely stay standing. Her vision went dark in waves, and her body went

limp.

Zac’s expression darkened.

The woman he had been holding by the shoulders was suddenly taken from him and pulled into Chris’s

arms.

Chris looked down at Winter in his arms, whose face had gone completely pale. The purple–red bruise on her temple was shocking to look at. Beneath his sharply furrowed brows, his dark eyes looked heavy and

unreadable.

His jaw tightened. He scooped Winter up around the waist and strode down the steps with his injured leg.

A chilling violence radiated off him, so intense that no one around him dared to step forward for a

moment.

He moved fast, almost in a rush, stepping over the shattered wreckage on the ground as he carried her

away.

Zac knew this wasn’t the time to stop him. Winter’s health came first no matter what. But he still rushed

forward and blocked Chris’s path.

“Give Winnie to me.”

Chris’s voice was frighteningly calm. “Move.”

“She was driving in a panic on the way here. She slammed on the brakes, hit her head on the car door, and got a mild concussion. Do you know why she was in such a rush?” Zac refused to back down.

Every word drove clearly into Chris’s ears.

Hit her head on the car door.

Mild concussion.

He wanted Chris to understand exactly how badly he had hurt Winter, how much this treehouse meant to

her.

He wanted him to understand how devastated and hopeless she had felt, watching the thing she had wanted to protect be destroyed with her own eyes.

The fingers applying the medicine paused for a second.

Chris didn’t move. Only after he finished applying the ointment did he stand and slowly walk to the door

of the room.

Outside, a dense line of bodyguards stood waiting. Every one of them was Zac’s men.

“I won’t let you get within another step of Winnie again.”

Chris only turned his head slightly and glanced at Winter on the hospital bed, who was already awake but refusing to open her eyes. He said nothing and walked away.

After he left, Zac ordered the bodyguards to spread out and stand guard. Then he closed the door to the room and walked over to sit by Winter’s bedside.
