The tiny foot in the photo was red and wrinkled, the way a newborn’s foot looks.

Winter didn’t know much about babies. Especially not after what happened a year ago. Since then, she had avoided anything to do with babies, even photos and videos. Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this little foot looked unusually small.

Why would a photo like this be in Chris’s room? Was it his, from when he was a baby?

She flipped the photo over.

On the back, there was only one character, written in bold, forceful strokes.

Xander.

Nothing else.

She turned it back around and stared at the tiny foot again. General nudged his big head closer, copying her, and let out a low, uneasy whine.

Outside, the rain had eased up. The estate was an older house with deep window ledges. When the wind blew, raindrops tapped the glass with a soft, restless patter.

The door creaked.

Then it shut with a thud.

General whirled toward the doorway and barked.

A tall shadow stood just inside, where the light didn’t reach.

Winter sprang to her feet. One hand pressed against General’s back, steadying him. The other clenched the photo tight. She had been scared so badly her breathing came quick and uneven as she stared at the shadow in the doorway.

The light snapped on.

The word “ghost” was right on the tip of her tongue, but she swallowed it. Still shaken, she stared at Chris in his rimless glasses, his eyes dark and deep.

General immediately ran over and circled him, like he belonged there.

Chris’s gaze slid back to Winter, calm and sharp. “Planning to sleep in here tonight?”

“You’re misunderstanding,” Winter said quickly. “General ran in by accident. I was coming to get him and take him out.”

She patted General’s back and turned to leave.

Chris acted like he hadn’t heard her. He took a step closer, cane in hand. “You can sleep here if

you

“That was before, she snapped, furious and flustered. “If General hadn’t run in here, I wouldn’t be in your room. Let go of me.”

Heat rushed to Winter’s face.

When had she ever complained about that? She wanted him to never touch her again.

“General,” she shouted, panicked, “bite him!”

General charged to the bedside, lifted his head, and barked twice. Then he spun in tight circles, anxious and helpless.

Winter’s brows drew together. Useless.

She fought hard anyway. Her knee slammed into him somewhere, and his grip loosened for a split second. She took it, twisting out from under him, jumping off the bed, and sprinting for the door.

General bolted after her, a cane clenched in his mouth.

Chris sat up on the bed and watched her flee like she was escaping a fire. He watched General chase after her, loyal to the last second.

Something flickered in Chris’s dark eyes.

A trace of amusement, so faint it was almost invisible.
