Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 118

Winter jumped out of the car and hurried inside. The second she saw Mr. White, she blurted, “What happened? Why did Grandma suddenly faint?”

She was so panicked she didn’t watch her step as she turned. Her foot caught the edge of the stair, and before she could stumble, Chris grabbed her wrist and pulled her against him.

Mr. White reached out to steady her, but his hand caught nothing.

He glanced at Chris, then lowered his voice to Winter. “Mrs. Xander Sr. heard Mr. Xander hit Dr. Davis. That’s how she found out you and Mr. Xander are talking about divorce. She couldn’t take it.”

Winter froze.

She and Chris had gone out of their way to keep the separation from the Xander estate, afraid the news would worsen Mrs. Xander Sr.’s health. And yet she still found out.

There was only one Dr. Davis in their circle. It had to be Zac.

Chris actually hit him?

Winter’s eyes dropped to the hand at her waist.

So that was why his hand was hurt.

She pulled away from Chris and kept going upstairs. “Is she awake now?”

When Winter entered the room, Steve was there too. Sasha was helping Mrs. Xander Sr. drink some water. Hearing Winter’s footsteps, Sasha looked up and said, “Mom, Chris and Winter are here.”

Mrs. Xander Sr. on the bed lifted a hand weakly. “I only want to see Winter. Everyone else can get out. All of you.”

Chris stopped mid–step. His dark eyes turned unreadable.

One by one, the others filed out until only Winter and Mrs. Xander Sr. were left. Outside the window, rain tapped softly against the glass.

“Grandma, please don’t be upset,” Winter said, holding her hand tight, her eyes full of worry. “I just didn’t know how to tell you about the divorce yet.”

Mrs. Xander Sr. squeezed her hand back. Her throat worked as she fought the emotion in her voice. You’re a good girl. I know you are. The one who’s wrong is Chris. If you’re asking for a divorce, then you must have been hurt. Badly.”

Otherwise, how could she let go when she loved him so much?

Winter’s eyes burned.

She had thought Mrs. Xander Sr. kept her in the room to do what she always did, to urge her to stay and

He had come back in such a rush he hadn’t even put on a coat. He wore a dark gray cashmere sweater and black pants. Even without a coat, he still looked composed, expensive, untouchable. He just stood there by the window smoking, like he belonged to the rainy night outside.

He was as hard to read as the darkness.

The hallway was the only way downstairs. Winter walked toward him, her gaze inadvertently brushing over the hand holding the cigarette.

The scrape on the back of his hand from his fight with Zac felt like a thorn piercing her heart.

“Why did you hit Zac?”

Smoke drifted in front of Chris’s dark eyes, like a thin veil. “What do you think?”

“If you hit him just because he’s close to me,” Winter shot back, “Then shouldn’t your precious childhood sweetheart have been dead by my hand a long time ago?”
