Chapter 65 Child Labor
[Anyone can see that Layla treats Yates like free child labor-use him or lose him.]
[Come again? Child labor is illegal. Don’t throw that kind of shade at Layla.]
[Technically, Yates is a minor. He’s only seventeen. But hey, if you don’t pay him, it’s not really employment right?]
[Does Yates know his fans are like this? Although, weirdly, you kind of have a point.]
“He’s better behaved than I? More obedient than me?” George’s finger trembled as he pointed at Yates. “That’s not what you said when you were chasing me!”
“When did I ever…” The words slipped out before Layla caught herself.
She had never done it. But the original owner had.
Since she’d taken over this body, she had to accept what the original owner had done before.
What is this? Karma?
Layla said calmly, “I was so foolish back then.”
She cursed the original owner in her head. She truly had been utterly oblivious.
Apart from being good-looking, what indispensable virtues did those mates actually have?
Especially George. In the entertainment world, he was never innocent.
“And now?” George’s eyes widened as he looked at her.
“Cured!” Layla enunciated each syllable. She pointed at the two buckets of water by his feet. “Still want to
trade?”
George’s eyes were full of disbelief.
He’d seen the live chat saying Layla’s change was just playing hard to get. His fans had even told him not to give her the chance.
But looking at her now, it didn’t look like she was playing hard to get at all. It looked like she wanted to cut all ties with him.
Cut all ties?
The thought made him inexplicably uncomfortable.
It was like… one of his fans had suddenly jumped ship for another idol.
No, it was worse than that.
A fan who’d supported him and bought his merch just yesterday had suddenly switched to his rival, erased all their posts about him, and begun attacking him.

CITA
Yeah. That was about it.
George stared at Layla with a vicious look. She was despicable!
He kicked over both buckets of water. “No trade!”
He turned and left.
Layla didn’t see anything wrong with that. Given George’s personality, that reaction was perfectly normal/
She didn’t try to stop him.
George got to the gate, then came back.
He picked up the overturned buckets, stomped off in a huff, and shot Yates a dirty look before leaving.
[What did our Yates ever do to deserve this?]
[Offending George? Might as well kiss his career goodbye. That guy’s Carson’s golden boy.]
[Wait, isn’t Stella the golden boy? Girl? Whatever.]
[Stella’s female. She’ll settle down and pop out kids sooner or later. When it comes to actually building a career, that’s a male’s game.]
The live chat went quiet for a moment. Layla wasn’t affected. She patted Yates on the shoulder. “It’s fine. Eat first.”
Even though Shane wasn’t entirely happy about Yates, he still sat down to eat.
Because the food had been served to him by Layla.
Once he finished his bowl of soup, he set it down and froze.
Layla gave him a suspicious look.
Mainly because of how heavily he’d set it down.
“Not eating anymore?”
Normally, he’d put away three bowls.
Whatever Layla left over, Shane would finish straight from the pot. And now he was full after just one?
It didn’t occur to Layla that he might be jealous. “Not hungry?”
Shane looked down at his empty bowl.
Yates quickly finished his soup, stuffed some wild greens into his mouth, and mumbled through his chewing. “Prof. Slater, just leave your bowl. I’ll wash it later.”
Shane looked up at Layla, his eyes full of grievance.

Chapter 65 Child Labor
It was all wasted longing. Layla didn’t notice a thing.
Actually, she wasn’t even looking at him. She turned to Yates with a pleased smile and said, “Now that’s knowing what needs to be done.”
Anyone who noticed work before being told was impossible not to admire.
Yates smiled bashfully, “I don’t have much else going for me.”
He was the main’dancer in his group, but on this show, being able to dance seemed completely useless. It couldn’t even help him escape a fox.
He never knew when the fox might suddenly appear. He didn’t even dare go far to forage-just poked around nearby.
“That’s not true. You can cook, and you can work. That’s plenty useful.” Layla smiled and reassured him, ‘I’ll go with you in a bit to get your things.”
“I’ll go with him,” Shane said.
Layla looked up.
Shane added. “People from the other cabins will be coming to trade for salt. I won’t be able to guess the weights.”
Layla thought about it. That made sense. She nodded. “All right, then. But keep him safe. There’s a fox roaming those woods. He’s terrified of that thing.”
Shane gave Layla another look. He pouted and muttered under his breath, “You care about him an awful lot.”
Layla shot him a sidelong glance. “I don’t care about you?”
Never mind how hard the original owner had worked to support him according to the novel’s plot. Just considering her own actions, she had done nothing wrong to Shane.
Shane thought it over. He felt a little guilty. But with that stern face of his, people who didn’t know him well couldn’t read his expression anyway.
And Layla certainly didn’t notice any change in his expression.
