Chapter 45 George Grew a Brain!
Stella’s question caught her off guard. “What do
you
mean?”

“General Hartwell’s catch paid for this stuff. What gives you the right to decide?” Layla shot back.
Stella blinked, then smiled shyly, “Layla, General Hartwell and I have always been casual with each other. We don’t stand on ceremony.”
Layla was so close to rolling her eyes.
Still bragging, flaunting how close she is to Liam.
“This isn’t about ceremony; it’s basic respect, right?” George looked up from his food, his expression serious. “Don’t tell me you’ve never even thought about respecting General Hartwell’s hard work?”
“George, that’s not what I meant,” Stella said, her eyes welling up as she looked wounded. “You know me; I’m not like that. I just think, since General Hartwell is Layla’s fiancé, his catch should go to her.”
“What did I say to make you cry?” George asked, putting down his fork now that he was full. He suddenly seemed to have an idea and smacked his own forehead. “Wait, are you trying to get your fans to come after me online?”
Stella’s face stiffened, confused about how George’s brain had suddenly started working.
[Hah, who knew? George grew a brain!]
George pointed at her, watching her expression change. “Oh wow, you’re changing your expression! I was right, wasn’t I?”
Stella went pale, swaying slightly as if about to faint from the insult. “George, how could you think that of me?”
[See? I told you. What a fake bitch!]
[I have experience with this. When I argue with my mate and realize I’m wrong, I pull this move. Works every time.]
[Please, I need a tutorial.]
[No need to ask. Stella is giving a free masterclass right now. Girls, take notes!]
George looked at Stella like she was an idiot. “You think that’s why I stopped coming to you? Those little tricks of yours might work on Liam, but don’t bother with me. I’m not impressed.”

Chapter 45 George Grew a Brain’
[George actually has some guts, saying that.]
:
[I know, right? I thought he had no brain. He said he was smart before, and I didn’t believe him. Turns out he’s not totally clueless.]
[Not totally clueless? He let Layla almost drown! His face was white as a sheet when he pulled her out.]
Layla patted George’s shoulder. “Don’t talk about Liam like that. I don’t think he’s as dumb as you say.”
George pushed her hand away. “Don’t touch me.”
Layla sighed.
Still the same tsundere.
“Who’s saying I’m dumb? Can you close the door? I can hear you.” Liam walked in, a dead lion slung over his shoulder.
The lion hit the ground.
Layla glanced at it, unimpressed. “I asked for something with long fur.” This lion’s fur wasn’t that long.
“Give it a rest. You want so much, go hunt it yourself,” Liam retorted, shooting her a look. He picked up a cup from the table, poured himself some water, and gulped it down.
Layla shrugged. “If I go myself, I won’t share with you.”
Liam set the cup down, thinking she had a point. “This one and the last one were a pair. I saw how devoted they were, so I kindly reunited them. Next time, I’ll get you something with long fur.”
“That’s more like it.” Satisfied, Layla went to inspect the lion.
It was a lioness, smaller than the male one from before, with lean muscles. Plenty of meat. It would last them a good while.
Still, she made a face. “Too skinny.”
She couldn’t let Liam get too proud, or his future catches might shrink.
Liam, unaware of her thoughts, shot back, “Want me to get you an elephant next?”
“Could you?” Layla’s eyes lit up.
Liam stared.

Does she not understand sarcasm?
[Layla-Liam’s personal kryptonite.]
[George-Stella’s personal kryptonite.]
[If you put it that way, I’m starting to ship it!]
Liam finally seemed to notice Stella. He sat down before asking, “Stella, what brings you here?”
His gaze slid over the familiar bag as if he didn’t see it, a smile on his face as he looked at Stella.
Stella looked deeply hurt. Fragile and unmoored, she turned to Liam as if he were her last anchor. “I wanted to return this jerky to Layla.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
“You should have given it to Layla,” Stella said softly, looking down. “You’re Layla’s mate, after all.”
Liam hummed, “Oh? I don’t remember ever marrying Layla.”
Hearing the displeasure in his voice, Stella panicked. She stepped forward and grabbed his sleeve. “No, that’s not what I meant. Liam, let me explain.”
Liam pulled his arm free. “You’re too close, Ms. Grant.”
The man who had just been calling her “Stella” now addressed her formally as “Ms. Grant”. Stella didn’t have to fake it this time-her eyes genuinely welled up, on the verge of tears.
“I really didn’t mean it like that, Liam. You know me. I’m just… I’m just so upset.”
