Layla shook her head without the slightest hesitation. “No. I’m not staying behind. I won’t feel at ease.”
Liam watched Layla’s firm stance and he knew exactly how things stood.
No one could force Layla to do something she refused.
And in the same way, nobody could hold her back when she set her mind on a goal.
It was a wonderful kind of hassle-dealing with someone so strong-willed.
Yates spoke up softly from the side. “Even if you’re heading out to look for something, you ought to fill your stomach first before you leave.”
He set down the meal he had prepared ahead of time, a flicker of hope in his eyes.
The mention of food hit Layla, and hunger washed over her.
Her stomach rumbled loudly. She smiled at Yates, “Alright.”
Yates was nowhere near as good a cook as Layla, but he had gotten fairly decent after days of practicing.
Layla ate until she was full. She checked the time and decided they needed to get moving right away.
Drawing on past experience, they had packed every piece of gear they would need for this trip.
Right before they departed, George grabbed Layla’s hand and swayed it back and forth. “Please stay safe, Layla.”
Layla found his concern amusing. She stroked the top of his head and spoke in a gentle tone. “I’m only going to scout the mine, not march off to an execution.”
George ducked his head, embarrassed.
His expression showed he had more he wanted to say, yet he held his words back.
Layla lifted one eyebrow. “Spit it out, George. You won’t get another chance once we leave.”
George glanced toward the other people standing nearby, then let out a small grumble. “You promised you’d grant me one favor before.”
Layla had not expected George to bring this up at that moment.
She gave a slight nod. “Fine. Tell me what you want me to do.”
George fidgeted, then steeled himself and looked straight at Layla. “Kiss me. It’ll make me feel better.”
Layla’s heart stirred. She saw eager hope written all over George’s fine-featured face.
She reached out and squeezed his cheek. “Okay.”

The words had barely left her mouth when she leaned toward George. She pressed a kiss to his cheek and brushed their noses together.
George’s eyes fluttered, and his heart hammered inside his chest.
The sweet scent from Layla’s hair drifted across his face.
He drew in a deep breath, and bright pink joy spread across his pale skin.
His happy mood vanished in the next instant.
Layla went on to plant quick kisses on Carson and Oliver, too,
Tears pricked at the corners of George’s eyes. “Layla, they never got you to promise them anything!”
Layla could see how wronged George looked, and she could not hold back her amusement.
She said in a generous tone. “That one’s a free bonus. It doesn’t count as your favor, okay?”
George’s bad mood melted away instantly. “Yeah, yeah, that works.”
Vanguard streamed the whole exchange live.
Viewers flooded the live chat with frantic messages.
(Oh, my gosh, Layla really knows how to work it. She’s got George wrapped around her finger. Look at how smitten he is-this is so sweet!]
[I’ve watched tons of romance shows and reality series, and none of them are half as cute as these guys.]
[They hardly gush about love out loud, but every moment between them feels so natural and nice to watch.]
[This show can never end. Watching these six people fall for each other is my whole reason to keep going.]
[Did anyone else notice how silly George was just now? He took that deep breath when Layla’s hair swept past his face.]
George realized his tiny reaction had been broadcast for everyone to see. His face burned bright red. Liam hefted the backpack holding all their supplies, gave it a shake, and turned toward Layla and the rest of the group. “We’re good to go.”
Layla waved at Carson and the others. “Keep watch over things here. We’ll be back soon.”
Carson nodded quietly. He said nothing more and watched Layla’s group walk farther into the distance.
This trip to the Starcore Essence mine was only for gathering samples.
They needed those samples to compare against the energy field’s composition. There was no reason to venture deep inside, surface-level specimens would be enough.
Layla turned toward Shane, who seemed lost in his own thoughts. Stay careful out there. You absorbed
